Deer Zola

I'm usually a day ahead, at least, for posts. Not today! Yesterday was fairly busy. More on that later. To start, we had an uptake in COVID from Lanark East – specifically Pakenham, Almonte and Carleton Place. They are shutting down for two weeks. Thanks to COVID-19 tracking, they've traced it to a 'social gathering; and then some of these people went to a pub, and from there it has spread to municipal offices, sports teams, etc. We are in Lanark West.

We had 21 deer yesterday. Poor JB's arm is still sore, so I went out to feed them. The trailcam caught the rising sun. Deer Mar 4

The only way we can tell them apart is by habits or behaviour. Zola's broken leg draws our attention.

Also, one doe has a single yearling. They hang around most of the day. JB calls them 'You Two' since he goes outside, he talks to them, "Hi, you two!" The yearling is fuzzy. Although, soon they won't be yearlings, and the males will split off to be with the other males. The does give birth in the spring, having been pregnant all winter.

There is another doe we can ID, and she has twins. You can watch for them. The twins like to play, as twins do. Otherwise, it's a dog-eat-dog world. When a pair of deer share a feeding spot, you know they are related. Zola continues to dominate a feeder. I think she is a survivor. She fended off several deer this a.m. deer Mar 4 1

In the evening, before I locked up, I noticed tracks in the snow. That could be Oregano, the wild cat. Although, when cats walk, they put their back paws into the spot where their front paws touched down. There is a name for that, but it escapes me.

It might be that Zola is senior, or certainly up the 'pecking order', for the other deer do take heed! YAM xx

Quite worrisome that some states are lifting restrictions and mask mandates. I'm afraid the virus doesn't go away simply because we are all tired of it.
love seeing the deer.

I have just heard that there may be outbreaks at several schools. Stay tuned.

I hope you stay safe and isolated out there with the deer. People are crazy for gathering in pubs.

Lockdown and contact tracing seem to help contain the spread, I just cannot understand how anyone with even the slightest symptom does not isolate.Love your deer herd.

It feels like the Covid status quo is never going to end.

Renfrew County is being bumped back to Yellow thanks to a social gathering that spread the virus. As far as I can see that just restricts the hours places like restaurants can be open. How is that stopping the idiots from having their bonfire parties and private gatherings????

It must be quite magical to have this ongoing association with the deer. I have no doubt that many of us envy the joy it must bring you.

Sorry to hear about the upsurge in cases Jenn. Good that they can track its source. These social gatherings have become such an issue on the spread. Thanks for sharing the geographic summary, always find these interesting. Sorry to hear that JB has hurt his arm and hope it heals quickly. I have said it before I know but I just love your header shot. Poor Zola! Has it healed and she just limps along? Sounds like she is okay, hopefully, if she is asserting her dominance at the feeders? Loved the photos and the videos and interesting tracks in the snow. You certainly live in a gorgeous area.

Your pension is going to be used up feeding all those deer.

It's heartening to read that where you live has contact tracers and actually think that Covid is a problem.

I love all your deer and the observations you make about them.

Oh wonderful videos of the deer and glad Zola is taking good care of herself ~ and that hubby got a break from feeding all the deer ~ 21 Wow!

Pubs attract the young who think they are invincible and forget they effect others ~ good for contact tracing ~ MA where I live is opening up many places and trying to get students back to schools ~ not sure about any of it ~ still feels too soon for me ~ time will tell.

Happy Weekend to you,

Hello Jenn,

I hope we all see the this Covid go away soon. We are waiting to get the first dose of the vaccine and then we will feel a little safer. I love all your deer, the header, the photos and videos are all wonderful. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, enjoy your weekend! PS, thank you for visiting and leaving me a comment.

I hate to hear about the increase in cases too. We still have to be so careful here in Florida. Love your deer! You sure have a good population!

How fortunate for Zola that she has your care! A few years ago, I watched in horrid frustration as a deer with a broken front leg perished trying to cross an ice-covered lake. She couldn't get her footing and fell repeatedly, ultimately freezing in the night. Our local wildlife department said nothing could be done.

BTW, I tried to subscribe to your blog but received an error page. If you're able to add me to your subscribers, please do!
