Saturday's Critters

 First up, red squirrels:

I put out a can of bacon fat to solidify, and our new visitor, Pepper, did a number on it. The nearest house to us must be a km away!

Down at the pond the mosquito larvae are hatched and growing. The beetle was dead, but interesting!

There are several in the goldfish pond, and I may want to take them to the wetland.

Walking down to the frogpond, I found a ruckus in the forest around a tall white pine. When blue jays harass something in a tree, it is usually something they see as a predator. I think it was a hawk of some sort. We have several around.

The Osprey are back to nest. We've a frequent flyer Merlin, as well as sharp-shinned, and red-tailed hawks.

April 11th, a skunk hunting for grubs! You go, toots!

As ever, I breathe more deeply as I see your wonderful critters! Am in a bit of a 'shellshock' from having committed to buying a brand new electric van... life is going to change! YAM xx

It's a good thing Pepper is obviously an outdoor cat, since the results of the bacon fat will be going through him soon. Sorry he scent marked your porch things...that's so hard to get out.

I hope the squirrel hides from those hawks.

You have a lot of critters on your property, in the air, on the ground, in the water!

Having my morning tea on the front porch, the birds suddenly go quiet. That's a sure sign the hawk is around.

Lovely - except for the 'squitoes which I can do without.

Lots of fun video but of course I liked the squirrel best! And that osprey is stunning.

Blue jays , magpies and crows make a big fuss when there's an owl or hawk of some kind.

Pepper just wants a friend, or two !! That was a very tasty treat. And Red Squirrel, what a busy fellow.

We don't get red squirrels here. It's interesting to see the different bird responses to a hawk sighting. Mostly they scatter, but blue jays have attitude :)
