Muskrat, porcupine, skunk!

People with trailcams will share the excitement of getting some decent exercise walking about the forest, tromping through forest debris, and smelling the fall smells. The sounds of the leaves underfoot.

There are very few bugs, which is a relief.

I trek up to the house, and load up the videos. Then, experience great glee as I spot a critter in the 30-second videos. It makes my day! I don't know if you remember my muskrats from way back when. We ended up with momma giving birth to 6 kits, and I watched them in the frogpond. It was a dry year, this year, and the frog pond couldn't support them.

We had muskrats in November, 2014 and April, 2016:

Muskrats in the frog pond

April is early this year!

This muskrat ran across the clearing. Then, a little later, a lovely, healthy skunk.

I haven't seen a skunk in ages!

Porcupines

They are such gentle critters. My photo shows the sweet face.

The night videos are great to show the action. Here is my question, is this the same porcupine going in circles around our biodome, or are there two of them?! First one is at 9 p.m., the next 10:47.

Hooper

This time, after my whining about not having a cat to walk with, Hooper went along with me on my walk. I was so pleased. He chatted with me the whole time. He'd been indoors most of the night, and was hot to trot.
He had a blast on lot #3 with me.

Jennifer, what kind of batteries does your trail cam use? Ours uses C cells and they go dead before it records anything useful. A leaf falling sets it off.

Lovely view of the canopy of those leaves about the tree where Hooper was, beautiful colours already. He is a delight to see with that bushy tail and keeping you company.

Skunks are fun to watch walking about. And in my experience, pretty amiable, as long as you give them plenty of space and don't startle them.

Glad you had company on your walk.

Karen, mine use 6 or 8 AA batteries. I've been using rechargables. I keep some regular batteries on hand and when they need a recharge, I swap them out for the day.
