Turkeys and more deer

This is from our kitchen window. Straight down the hill is the trailcam. The one turkey was being silly! Unlike domesticated turkeys, they can fly. It takes a lot of energy, so they tend to walk everywhere, looking for food.

This is the slightly older buck. I went out onto the deck to grab a photo. He's probably 3 or 4 years old. Down on the highway, right in front of our mailbox, a small deer was smucked by a car. I hope for rain to wash the blood off the road. I had to run off to see my client, but on the way home I planned to put its body into the ditch. Thankfully, someone, perhaps our county road crews, had taken care of it. What a relief.

In the background, you can see the house up top of the hill, behind the buck. This is the middle-sized buck. The big buck (Our buck!), has disappeared since Sunday. Then, two with what my daughter calls pickle-stabber antlers! They seem to be brothers, and play around a lot.

Meanwhile, in the front yard... one pickle stabber has twisted off one of his antlers. They usually fall off in January or February. Our weather has been wonky, though, with temperatures going up and down.

Once upon a time we had a domestic deer farm. We called those young males Spikers. They were awfully entertaining at feeding time. I had a special bucket I would put on my head, with some branches on either side. They perceived this as a bigger set than theirs so they wouldn't challenge me. It was a hoot.

Karen, that is really funny!
Actually, I was on the back deck, taking these photos and he saw me. He slowly started walking towards me, and it kinda creeped me out!

You've got quite a bit of company around the property!

The lost antler may have resulted from some serious fighting.

I didn't know wild turkeys fly.

I once saw a turkey fly across the road -- right in front of my car windshield. Mighty impressive sight!
