I heartily recommend this novel. Waubgeshig Rice is a young Anishinaabe author, who was on CBC Ottawa for a long time. We followed his marriage, and the birth of his son, on Twitter. Since then, he's gone back north to work on Sudbury CBC. We miss him!It was a great read. I was on the edge of my seat. Waub, as everyone calls him, has incorporated the Anishinaabe language, as you can read in the snippet below, as well as details from the history of the treatment of Indigenous People in North America. These are important reads for white settlers, as Canadians seek Truth and Reconciliation between nations. It is something we can do to better understand the history of the development of North America.
It is important, following the Truth and Reconciliation Act, to bear witness to the misogyny, the gender bias, and the stereotypical attitudes of the 'founding fathers' who wrote the Indian Act, and created abusive Residential Schools. First Nations have spent much time, energy, and willpower, fighting back peacefully, and in the courts.
Waubgeshig Rice is an author and journalist originally from Wasauksing First Nation. His first short story collection, Midnight Sweatlodge, was inspired by his experiences growing up in an Anishinaabe community, and won an Independent Publishers Book Award in 2012. His debut novel, Legacy, followed in 2014. He graduated from Ryerson University’s journalism program in 2002. In 2014, he received the Anishinabek Nation’s Debwewin Citation for excellence in First Nation Storytelling.
