Hubby named the hawk 'Ronny,' and yesterday I realized there are The Two Ronnies. Hah! And HE thought he was the comedian!
I still haven't narrowed its species down. I don't think it is a red-tailed hawk. (They are easy to spot.) I went to this page, which helps some. Gilligallou Bob's video helps.
Gilligallou has a book, Hawks and Owls, by a Guelph Professor, he has a hawk comparison chart in his book. We may have to get this. Hubby was just up in Almonte, buying himself 'Grampa's Weeder!'
Now, pet peeve.
Why is it social media doesn't hesitate to use disparaging comments such as, 'Not your Gramma's....' but Grampas are OK?
I was on the front deck, watering plants, and I heard Ronny. He flew from the backyard to the front, just as JB came home from Meals on Wheels. That is in the video. It's not too clear, but this is frequently what Ronny does, following the driveway.
A little while later, I was on the back deck reading and I heard the hawk whistling, again. This time there were two of them, as well as the turkey vultures. There is roadkill just south of us. Butch raccoon. The blue jays, again, let me know the two Ronnies were there.

In the meantime, the little hummingbird visited the feeder. I haven't seen the bear in a few weeks, so I put the feeder up on the back deck.

I felt badly for the hummers, as they keep buzzing the planter in front, with the cherry tomatoes, thinking it might be a red flower!

And you can actually hear the hummer buzzing!
Thanks for sharing!
I'm the only person in the world who would get the Ronnie Hawk thing. I liked Rockin Ronnie Hawkins!
Ronnie Hawkins, right? I get it. Red tailed hawks are easy to spot in flight. I love seeing hawks, especially sitting on a pole, or on a dead tree branch at the side of the road. Magnificent creatures.
Reading the comments, now I get the Ronnie thing. I used to have a friend called Ron, and we called him Rompin Ronnie for a time, or just The Romper.
