Bird hunting: hawk didn't like to be photographed!

After my last post on birds who soar, I spotted a raptor of some sort sitting on a branch.
S/he didn't like me photographing, turned around backwards, gave me the eye over a shoulder, and took off.

The debate is strong. Probably red-tail hawk, because of the red. But look at those feathery legs!!!

Debate is: Coopers Hawk, red-tailed hawk, sharp-shinned hawk...

You can go to Cornell U. and find more info. They are offering free downloads of bird songs.

Funnily enough, we were on our way to check out Gilligalou Bird Store: Bob & Louise - Gilligallou Bird store shared a link.

When is a shopping mall not a shopping mall? When it's Heritage Court, in Almonte.

Gives new meaning to the phrase "shake your tail-feathers" doesn't it! Nice shots...wonder if the feathery legs are a result of the cold weather? I know so little about these birds!

Not a Coopers or a Sharp Shinned, but definitely a Red Tailed Hawk. Great shots!

My vote is for rough-legged hawk, although I don't know if they have red on the tail. But this one sure is wearing feathery pantaloons.

I'm not good at identifying birds, I have a wildlife chart that helps me a lot with the more common ones.

I'm pretty happy to just know it's a hawk ;>) Nice pictures -- I like the one where s/he's turning her back on you (really does look like she's telling you she doesn't want his picture taken!)

These are excellent photos of a hawk, they do not like to be photographed :).
