Saturday's Critters

Things have been quiet. We keep hoping for rain.

Fred and little Fred:

Butch has been around. Just one at a time. This is the first year we haven't seen any kits on the trailcams. It is unusual.

The coyote with the messed up leg hasn't been around since July 18.

I do like watching the porcupine. They are so quiet, and just amble around the forest.

Then there are the stink bugs! Pretty colours, I would say.

The gray tree frog:

🐛Monarch caterpillars. The first looks like the 3rd instar (morph), the others perhaps the second.

🐸I managed to take the goldfish pond pump out and clean it. Froggie wouldn't move so I had to bonk his raft out of the way. He wasn't amused.

Saturday's Critters

Well, typical November weather, lots of precipitation. The Great Lakes are warm, this year, so this means more precipitation. Last November we had winds, snow and power outages! We got this!
❄ NOVEMBER 2021 ⛈

The fisher seems to avoid the camera. Some critters don't care.

You'll find Chad coyote quick and sprightly as a fox! I am enjoying the new placement of camera #2. It captures them twice. They are familiar with camera #3, and sometimes dash by, but I get them on the run!

I took a couple of pie pumpkins down for the deer. Apparently, Chad had to mark them, twice. I hope you find the coyote and the pumpkin as funny as I did.

On my way down to the trailcams, doe a deer was wondering what I was up to.

The doe, and the doe with a fawn are our frequent visitors. The first clip in this video is beside the mouse hole, which I've been unable to videotape.

I gave up and switched the direction of the camera, which gave me more images!

Finally, the wild turkeys have been out and about. They don't worry about the cameras!

critters

With the deep snow cover, there haven't been too many exciting critters, just the same old ones on the trailcams and out the kitchen window.

We have winter birds. OK, had. I haven't seen them since. Such a dreary day.

An archive photo, so you know what they really look like!

I love the turkeys! The snow is so deep for them. They were quick!

This is why they get snow on their faces.

It's been quite cold over the last few days.

Deer, coyotes

We've been in a deep freeze. Common for January. I don't mind it. I think it is better than freeze/thaw. The snow protects flora and fauna. That said, it's warming up for the next week, with temperatures hovering around the freezing point.

I'm always amazed with the way the critters manage in the cold and the snow.

This is the old trailcam. I love the shadows in the back. The buck appeared briefly, as well. Then, a doe wanted to do a selfie! I love the whiskers and ears.

The coyote appears, still worried about the light. This is good, as they aren't comfortable with human things.

I think I am getting the hang of the new trailcam. These aren't bad. Deer and coyote...

Who goes there?

I have two trailcams set up. Sometimes the critters cross the meadow and amble around the end of the frogpond.

The raccoons were a hoot in the forest. As I went through the 30-second clips I noticed a lump in the bracken. It wasn't until I went back that I saw that it hunkered down having a nap. Then, they were back and the quiet one had a fight with a sibling.

Our big buck continues to cruise around.

We have one doe hanging about, as well. Watch at about 40 seconds in, in the second clip, as she sticks out her tongue.

This turkey is the one still missing a tail feather.

Our son-in-law is running for the Green Party.
Isabelle helped with signage!
In other news, Canada had a big, national debate on TV last night. As they went up to the Museum of History, there were rallies to cheer for the six candidates. Our kids went.
Dressed in their greens!

They were behind the neon green sign at the 13 second mark of this clip:
Green Party Leader Elizabeth May and her husband John Kidder arrived at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que. in a Tesla vehicle ahead of the official English-language leaders’ debate. The kids are in the 20 - 30 sec. section. It's so much fun! You can't really see them, but it was fun.

So many critters!

Everything is still green. For now.

We have had this buck around for weeks. He really ought to have a name, although I should check the photos, as it could be Jake! (The antlers grow the same shape each year!)

The critters are having fun, especially the young deer!

This was pretty funny!

How many do you think?!

Then, do not forget the handsome coyote!

Who goes there?

This is the action around the house. I selected the very best image, if you don't want to bother with the video itself.

There are three bucks who hang out together. Thursday morning  I went to the meadow to fetch the SC cards, and two deer took off, again! They visited all week. The cameras are in two places. One is up beside the driveway. In the video, below, you can see trailcam #1. Then, across the grass, there is a path down to the meadow.

I like to see who visits in the dark!

The turkeys have been amazing. I haven't seen them in a long time. Mommas have been taking care of the chicks. We took one to the wildlife rescue people. [LOOK FOR THE HELPERS!]

They were up top, then moved down into the meadow.

You never know what triggers them. I often look to see if they are followed, but not in this case!

Rideau Canal, Big Rideau Videos

June 26

We followed the trails of the South Wind Brigade. We stopped following here, at Rideau Ferry, since I knew that there would be a lot more coverage in the bigger towns and cities leading to Canada Day.
I was so impressed with the ages of participants. They defy the myth that we seniors are a drain on the system.

We happened upon these folks, all retired educators, who are doing the same trek from Kingston to Ottawa. Neighbours happened to similarly be retired educators from Durham district, and prepared a lunch for the crews.

Barred owl bathing, woodpeckers, Bambi, wood ducks, newt at the pond

Most normal people are having a wonderful long weekend with family or friends. Me? I was rototilling the garden. Drawn away by the lure of my feathered friends, my arms jiggling and only half done. Saturday afternoon I had confirmation momma is still on the nest. They had a long, 4-sentence conversation. She interrupted him, too! (He had the last word, though.)

What a gift, watching our Barred owl having a bath in the wetland. He knew I was there, I've been watching him for more than a month. In the background you can hear the rose-breasted grosbeak, blue jay, grey tree frog, etc.! Just before he went for a swim, a chickadee was trying to talking him into taking off. I thought I heard the owl chick, but I'm not sure. The siren at about 2:00 startled him. He sat a long time grooming, which is why I separated it into two videos!

Owl bathing from Jennifer Jilks on Vimeo.

After his bath, my Owl began grooming. It's quite a process!
An expert ID'd an oven bird and a vireo in the songs! (I'm hopeless at that!) There was another bird I spotted, but I couldn't snatch a photo. Eastern Kingbird, methinks. The woods are full.

Indeed, this is a Woodpecker nest. After gardening, I came up behind the house, onto the driveway, and could hear a ruckus. The jays were harassing momma. You can hear the babies screaming for food! She stood her ground and I chased the jays off. Momma's been taking our birds seed to the babes. I yelled and the jays scattered.

The frog pond has been busy. The ducks have begun mating yet, although its in their mind. The deer is curious. The ducks came back. I added some audio from a different video as the trailcam is silent.

At first I thought salamander, but a biologist assures me it is a newt! There are quite a few. I saw a Red eft, it's nymphal stage, last week.

The experts think woodpeckers! This was before I spotted the momma! The sound is amazing!

She did a fly-by, then came back and landed, thinking we weren't too much of a threat. Me an' Daisers!

What a visit it was!

Another fine day in southeastern Ontario!
Mommy and Papa were playing archery tag, we met them halfway to pass over the girls! You can Google photos!
Previously, Mommy played bubble soccer with her colleagues.

We eased into the day, watching Daniel Tiger until nearly noon, when Jos got up! (She's practicing for being a teenager!) In the meantime, I was in and out of the house, as we had our tap repaired.  He went back to the store, as it had to be totally replaced.

After another breakfast/lunch at noon on the front porch, we went back to the fort and the frog pond.
We did managed to catch some Wood frogs, and watch others mating. They 'hug,' then she lays the eggs and the smaller male, on top, deposits the sperm.
amplexus
I can't show you anymore photos, since Izzy peeled off her clothes to play in the sun in the frog pond. At one point, wearing just boots, she jumped off the dock. She couldn't help herself! She did shriek!
Jos took off her leggings, and went in in her boots.

Happily, Jos spotted a Ribbon snake! We couldn't catch it, though, as it was too fast for me! The frogs were part of the catch-and-release program. There are thousands in the pond. (You can hear them in the videos!) There are big snails, as well as bullfrog tadpoles.

A fly-by shooting. A hawk, methinks.

In the meantime, while we still imagine Buster is here; at the door, outside playing. It is a grieving process.

Dorah has responded really well to his absence, mushing on top of me, on the chair in the living room- for the first time in months. (His aggression was increasing.) Dorah went outside, as well, which she hasn't done in months, only partly due to the weather. It takes an adjustment, but having the girls here was wonderful, and a good distraction to soften our heartache.

This is part one. Part two involved a little more water! She made it along the fallen tree trunk, and back.

Isabelle wanted to catch a frog. She went to the far side, which is warmer and more shallow. She got more than just a soaker, dancing happily back to me. "Next time I go in there, I'm going naked!"

I had strict instruction to film this episode. Running down the hill into the gully, and back up to the fence!

Ticks are still tocking

UPDATE: as of Nov. 10th we've harvest 99 ticks off the cats! Daisy, who likes to sit in the grass looking for mice friends, account for 66 of them!

Fall means ticks from Jennifer Jilks on Vimeo.
Poor little Daisy had a huge tick on her this morning. I removed it, and popped it into the jar of rubbing alcohol. You can see the bodies of the other ticks we've removed.

This one had been on Daisy likely sucking her blood for days, it's terribly large.

Poor Annabelle

This is the adult creepy crawling around.

Videos this week: croaking plant, Daisy froggin'

I brought this plant in, it had a tree frog in it. I couldn't find the frog. Days later I still don't know where the frog is...

Croaking plant from Jennifer Jilks on Vimeo.

Clearing out the goldfish pond, I was taking frogs out, putting them in the frog pond by the meadow. I gathered 18, but 6 remain. Then, trying to catch the goldfish to bring them in for winter. Daisy was helping. More photos tomorrow!

My latest videos

I have so much fun with the videocam. It's entertaining watch the critters.

I love how she pounces.

Wood duck bathing from Jennifer Jilks on Vimeo.
This is as close as the Wood ducks will let me get to them! They are shy about being photographed.

Goldfish swim from Jennifer Jilks on Vimeo.
They love the overflow pipe. Dancing in the water. Finally, outside in the big pond!

Grosbeak male from Jennifer Jilks on Vimeo.
This video is about Rose-breasted Grosbeak male, ever vigilant for predators. I haven't seen the Sharp-shinned hawk in awhile. There is much more food available elsewhere, rather than around the feeders!

Grosbeak drink from Jennifer Jilks on Vimeo.
Mr. & Mrs. Rose-breasted Grosbeak are nesting nearby. She came for a drink. I love my birdbath.

I have many helpers out in the garden, weeding! Even Daisy came over to help.

Buster, Dratted Red Squirrels, Annabelle

Poor Buster is cold and preferred watching Dratted red squirrels from inside the front window. Annabelle was just too tired to care. We're still -15 C. ovenight, with daytime temps above 0.

Buster is cold from Jennifer Jilks on Vimeo.

I peeked out the window, and there were 5 of them. It's taken them about a month to figure out the new peanut feeder. Then, they have to fight over it. Only a couple of Blue jays have it figured out. The trick is to simply yank the peanut out between the coil.
