7c. James Joyce Pub

James Joyce Pub, Calgary

This is a special pub. Hubby used to hang out here in the day. He had his 50th birthday party there, comped by the owner. Gerard Curan wasn't there, it would have been a fun reunion!
This is the poster he managed to fly back to Ottawa, after his Calgary party in 1999. Everyone at the party signed it!

This was before my time. (We met in Ottawa, introduced by our friend, Maria Hawkins, the Ottawa Blues Lady.)

Inside the pub!

Stephen Avenue Walk - Downtown Calgary

Following our lunch, we trekked up the street. How civilized to close it to vehicles!

Just to the west of 1st Street, you’ll come across a bronze of two super-sized businessmen in hats and topcoats, shaking hands to seal a deal. Titled The Conversation, it’s one of the city’s most familiar and endearing art pieces, recognizing the Calgary’s ever-present entrepreneurial spirit.

The gigantic 26-metre-tall Trees sculptures.

The ten tree sculptures located north of the west tower of Bankers Hall, on Stephen Avenue, are a gift from Trizec Hahn Office Properties to the City of Calgary, made in 2000 following the completion of the second Bankers Hall office building. Since it is difficult to grow trees in Calgary, it was decided that the ten sculptures comprised of two design types would take the form of stylized trees as conceived by the Architect.

Back we went to the hotel! Our last night.

After a rest, we met a friend of JB's for dinner at the airport.

Looks like a good ending to a good trip. Or is it then end? Well, I know that you actually have to get on and off the plane. :)

Your hubby seems to have put on a bit of weight. Perhaps it's good for him. That's what usually happens when we eat at hotels and pubs, and then stay in the car or on plane. Walking might help burning the calories - or not.

Actually, that's a side effect of his prostate cancer treatment, Duta. Sad to say. That, and swollen lower legs (water retention), and hot flashes. It's still better than cancer, which is being held in abeyance, for now. Between that, and his dairy, yeast and egg intolerance, it's tricky feeding him, or eating out. He's been working hard on his weight, walking every morning, to try and assuage this. The latest ultrasound (#4), despite some issues, looks the same as #3, this is good news.

those trees, innovative in thinking to stylize them that way.Weight gain, Hugh is on prednisone for PMR, and I am sure some people who do not know him wonder how he could be the weight he is now. JB, just keep on being well.

There are some very interesting statues there. Not least "the conversation", so well portrayed as making a deal. That pub could well be in old England except that people would be sat inside mostly.

We enjoyed our visit to Calgary. We stopped there in our plane and had fun walking around town and staying in a hotel after camping across the north country. Then we went back later via airliner to see the Stampede. A vibrant town. - Margy

I couldn’t quite figure out what the food is but it looks Asian and delicious.

What a classic-looking pub. Just the sort of place my hubby would choose for his 50th if we weren't doing it here at home! I am a little sad they have to build tree sculptures 'cause they can't grow the real thing ...
