Even the frost is quaking now: a cryoseism!

A cryoseism, also known as a frost quake, may be caused by a sudden cracking action in frozen soil or rock saturated with water or ice. As water seeps down into the rock, it freezes and expands, putting stress on surrounding rock. This builds up until it is relieved explosively in a cryoseism.

There was one on Christmas Day.

I heard some. Rather weird.

Were you one of the people who heard a loud boom on Christmas Eve? If so, you may have heard a rare frost quake.

Also, this morning.

In the meantime, this was the damage on Christmas Day in New Brunswick

Good grief! That's the first time I've heard of a frost quake. It must be scary to hear.

Have a wonderful, healthy and safe new year, Jenn.

OMW all I can think is that in a few weeks that stuff is likely to hit the UK... not that we've been without our own storm issues. Wishing you all the best for this New Year and do hope that you are able to enjoy it, despite some clear impediment. My thoughts go out to all who are without power still, amongst that cold... Big Warm Hugs, YAM xx
