Heron & Halifax & Labbit

It was a bit of  shock. Three cm of snow. I didn't let it bother me, and I didn't shovel. It is going to melt this week. It was 1 ℃. and the ground isn't very frozen, not much ground frost after our high temps.

I thought I ought to talk about my heron sculpture! It is one of my favourites.

We bought on a trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia. I remember bringing it home on the plane. They wrapped  it in bubble wrap, I'd bought it in Peggy's Cove. It was funny getting it on the plane. Awkward, I guess. But it made it. I love this bird. The other one, the little one, is a brass sculpture by Siggy Puchta. I bought that one in a Tweed gallery on time payments when I was single. I was so proud of that layaway purchase.

2003 -ish

It's been busy! Freezing cold, and I mistakenly left the water barrel full. Our temperatures have ranged from -12 a few days ago to 16 ℃ last week, and it is bizarre.

The poor goldfish pond! It slowly dripped and froze.

The skies have been interesting.

This is really funny. I am having no luck capturing the strange visitor cat. It's been sighted 7 km away, and surely must live somewhere between here and there. My plan was to take it to the vet and see if it had a chip. I've not caught the cat. Despite mice friends who are visiting.

It's been all set up. I've tried several times. I posted this on our local Facebook page and, either the owner has realized that the danged cat has been crossing the highway in the dark at night (dangerous) or... I dunno. I haven't see the cat for about 10 days, when we had warm weather. This is my set-up, the camera in front of the trap, just for evidence.

I laughed so hard.

What happened? A cottontail.

I released it while JB filmed it. I knew Labbit would be out of there like a bat outta hell!

We saw the sun!

We were onto another series on Amazon. It is called Origine (Origins), and takes place near Angoulême, France. It features views of the river Charente and it is beautiful. I like the listening to the French language and reading the subtitles, I am remembering some of my long-lost vocabulary.

Anyway, in Season 2 they replaced the female lead, Mickey Sebastian with a younger actress. The chemistry is gone. We won't finish it, as the plot didn't grab us either. Ageism rears its ugly head as the producers messed royally to switch out respected mature, gifted actors with youth.

We began a very dark Italian TV series: Thou Shalt Not Kill. There are no lighter moments to relieve the tension, and I find such a difference between this and other series. Ciao!

Speaking of videos, the town of Perth, ON, has begun posting YouTube tourist marketing videos! I don't know if you are interested, or if you want vicarious travel, as I do. It is a pretty town.

💐My Amaryllis now has three white blossoms! The Alyssum I seeded is coming along VERY s-l-o-w-l-y. I intend to put it into the terrarium. We shall see.

My orchid has two long blossom stems coming out!

Here she is! It was a fundraiser for our local provincial park. The first photo is how the artist displayed it. I shall have to find a place for her.

I cleaned my other heron, brought home from Halifax one year. Cinnamon seems quite concerned!

Our Anniversary dinner!

September 2nd – a week ago. We did not go out for our 20th anniversary, which was Aug. 22nd. We had the grandies that week, and they were quite happy with spaghetti. I was quite happy to cook for them.

Caitlin kindly gave us an electronic gift certificate to our favourite restaurant. We like the patio. It was the last outdoor meal for the season, I think. It looks like Autumn in spots.

The corn and the flocking birds, about to migrate. Impossible to capture on a drive-by shooting, but you get the idea!

You could tell it was a long weekend. Those able to take time off work did so, and were on the move. This is Highway #15 at #7. Back ups for a long way.

It is a lovely location for a restaurant. Condos in the far end of the old building. We have not eaten indoors in a restaurant in three years. We feel safe on a patio, in the open air, and that is where we ate.

I am not happy eating indoors what with the amount of Omicron out there. That, and the lack of testing, and the lack of masking in many indoor places, makes this a happy place for me.

The wasps are hungry for food. Our food. They know winter is coming. There were quite a few, but no bites, and we enjoyed the meal.

The bonus was a blue heron.  When I processed the video at home, I noticed it was doing strange things with its tongue. I have no idea what is up with that!

It is a lovely old town.

This was unusual. They want someone to rent this spot!

Cataracts Part VII

First off, Jos was up at 7. She wanted to see us before we left the house at 8:30, waking at 7 she thought she might as well stay up. This was a final follow-up appoint, last one in the city. Next time (in a month) I go to my own optometrist to ensure all is well. However, I'd read that they are on strike during August. We shall see.

The news didn't look good. A scary report: power outage the previous night, due to a traffic incident. Lots without power!
The cause:
UPDATE: 'No trace of the driver': Driver flees on foot after collision near Almonte that left 2 injured and over 500 without power

Undaunted, we said goodbye and headed to the city. The hibiscus are huge and looking great. It's tough leaving home!

My best hosta, uneaten, as yet.

Perth was quiet. It is so sad seeing this store close. Do you remember it, Yam?! The employees were keeping it going, as the boss wants to retire.
Very quiet.

We knew this. Construction...

It looks so peaceful in the countryside. Cows chewing their cud in the 30 C. heat.
The crops are growing.
Hay is done!

Idiots are late leaving home...

The nurseries are done  their strawberries. More crops are on their way.
Yikes!

It wasn't too hot for a riding lesson.

Along Woodroffe, social distancing for cars. Not for COVID–19, but for incidents, distracted driving, and the like.

This place had a fire. It's so sad, all these weeks later, that it hasn't been fixed.

We made it. We left at 8:25, arrived by 9:45, a tad early for our 10:30 appointment. There is a process, however, which takes time. Several tests: examining my eye pressure, a vision test (I'm still 20/20 in 2020!), and inspection by the doctor.

Finally, after awhile, we were ready to see the dear doctor.

The technology is amazing.

I have had a great check up. Things are healing nicely. The Dr. said that since I am 'young' for cataracts, I may have to come back for 'polishing' in a year, or two or three. This can be done in the iCare clinic on Carlingwood Ave., where my initial consults were made. It's called YAG Laser Capsulotomy.  We'll see what happens.

Riverside Hospital cancelled all cataract surgeries for August, so we were fortunate to get it done at Lasik in July.

Done by 11:00, we texted Caitlin and Josephine, and said we were on our way. Josee was in charge, being 12½.

JB pondered the name of this business: Alaska Wood Industries. We are a bit far away from Alaska.
"Alaska Wood Industries was founded in 1978 by European immigrants, Ranko and Cveta Ignjatic as a small millwork shop. "

The water lilies and water hyacinth are blooming.

As I pass spots on the river, like this, I often imagine the flowers on the river, the herons, the pickerel weed.

Always work to be done, even in the heat.

Home and safe by 12:30. The girls were told not to have soup, we didn't want them at the stove while we were gone. We arrived in good time for lunch, though. Both girls had chicken noodle soup. The previous day, Josee had butter chicken, which was good, too!

Then, more adventures, a hike. More on that tomorrow!

It's not simple, health care. You usually aren't just done. It's the follow-ups that wear you down!

Cataract surgery: non-progress report from July 2019 to February, 2020. COVID–19 shut it all down.

Cataracts III – July 17, 2020 a consult with a private clinic.
