March 22 – River Otters

My client's extended family was visiting unexpectedly (I provide respite twice a week), and I was able to go home early.

Upon arriving home, I suggested we take a drive.
What about Code Dr.?

Sure!

I haven't seen river otters in a bit. I know I spotted one in a forest, but it was a drive-by situation.

No birds, this spot is famous for birds, but a pair of river otters having a blast! The water isn't open enough for any but the otters.

At first, they were at the dam. Then they swam along the river, popping up where the river was open.

Suddenly, they disappeared. The photos, above, were from the car window. I got out of the car. As I suspected, they'd gone through the culvert, into where the river turns to a creek in the wetland.
You must imagine: in the next photo, two otters peering up at me, on the other side of the road, behind where we'd parked the car. I wasn't quick enough for a photo!!!

This is the view of the river and the culvert.

I love their antics. They are so joyful, playful, spontaneous and quick.
You can see we still have snow, as well as ice. Our fields are like this.

This is a drive-by, hard to see, but the geese and ducks are all lined up on the edge of the ice in the river.

I will zoom in: you get the picture! Like cheerleaders lined up on the ice, hoping to encourage a spring thaw.

From here, we drove to Poonamalie Rd. They are working on the Rideau Canal locks, there. We'll have to go back!

Around to Rideau Ferry, under the bridge. The Rideau Lakes have melted some and thawed, then refrozen.

Dinner at the recently reopened, and newly bought, CC's. Yum! Hubby had chicken fingers and onions done a little differently. They were amazing. I had my predictable shrimp and pasta, my fave.

What a delightful lens-capture! We're told there's more snow on the way here... sigh... YAM xx

Oh my - what a day - and such beautiful photos - and yummy food. And so cold, we are easing towards spring and thankfully don't have ice and snow to contend with. Have a great week ahead.

What a great day out.

They're delightful animals. I've seen them the odd time in Algonquin, but wasn't able to photograph them.

Such lovely photographs.
We get so little snow in my part of the UK ... in fact it has been raining for part of the weekend, although it was nice to get out for a walk between the rain showers.

All the best Jan

I've never seen an otter here. Too much of our land is developed so many critters are gone.

I can definitely imagine those little clowns peering up at you. Because every time we've been lucky enough to see otters (either river or sea) it always feels like they're watching us as much as we're watching them. They always also seem to be having fun. What a nice drive -- and neat to take advantage of the unexpected time.

Travelling about is a little bleak these days, and when the snow goes, and before it begins to green up, it will get bleaker. But that is for me. You seem to know what to look for.
