I remember the first time I saw deer go up on their hinds legs. They are very powerful.

Pine needles don't sound very tasty, but perhaps they have some nutrition I don't know about.
The deer here stand on their hind legs when the bottom of our ornamental crabapple tree has been stripped of fruit. The younger ones browse in the snow for fallen crabapples.

One of the contractors working on our place told me that they eat the needles for extra energy. Whenever you see them doing that, you're in for a very cold night. So far, he's been spot on.
