Bird watching

Bird watching from the window is grand. This old fart is happy bird watching from the warmth. I did snowshoe yesterday, more on that later!

The seed catcher has been working well. I enlarged the holes in the bottom as the small seeds were getting caught in the holes. It has been fun seeing the Mourning Doves feeding there. They do poop, though. I inverted the old, split plastic piece in it, which will make it easier to clean. I have to clean out the bird bath daily, as the doves poop in that, too!

I did a bird count for FeederWatch.org and reported THREE male cardinals, all chasing one another. The female went after a male, as well?!  Feeder Watch encourages citizen naturalists to report mammals around the feeder. The Dratted Red Squirrel have dug their winter tunnels. The tunnels run from the base of the feeder, under the snow, opening out under the Horse Chestnut tree. We do have an owl and hawk.

I can never tell Purple Finches apart from House Finches. We had three of them.

Some birds tolerate others more readily.

This was funny, with the mourning dove coming in for a landing, and the male finch taking off:

I asked the Cardinal to move a little aside, you can see the Finch behind him.

We've three Goldfinches, as well.

This camera on the deck has been tricky.

Happy birding birders!

What fun to watch all your players in bird theatre. Other creatures at the feeders is a main reason I stopped putting out seed - it drew in mice & that becomes a very big problem, that we don't need. I do leave the flower seed heads from the coneflowers for the birds.

The birds and deer and others do help to get you through the winter.

That seed catcher is a really great idea. I do love seeing cardinals in the snow -- they're so bright and cheery!

I notice you don't put chemicals on any sidewalks etc. Good for you. Loved seeing how fluffy the birds are to keep warm!

Cute birdies. Wish I had a trail camera. Kansas City had a layer of freezing rain on top of our snow. I saw 10 or so robins this mornin;, wonder where they came from!? The manhole cover in my yard is always warm, so they were drinking water from the patterned squares in the depths of the design. But I saw several landing in the freeze-topped snow drift nearby. They'd slide if they landed too fast, and then tried to walk on the solid ice. One foot would slide out from under them and they'd fall. I think the birdies were surprised at their new ice rink. Several cars, semis, and even the salt trucks were surprised too when their vehicles slid off the roads. Linda in Kansas
