Saturday drive to Elgin: Rideau Ferry to Elgin

We decided to go for a drive in the sunshine, before the snow fell.  Our first spot, the Rideau Ferry bridge, is down to one lane, again. They are repairing it for another year. They don't work weekends, and should be done by July. It was quite quiet!

We drove through Portland. They have a marina. And they had a fire. There are lots of farms about.

Elgin is a sweet town, with a mix of buildings and churches.  It dates back to 1801, and has a population of about 300. Our local towns have a number of walking tours, including Elgin.

The sedimentary rock is obvious along the highway.

This is call the Elgin Unconformity. There is a gap of 500 millions between the overlying Cambrian sandstones, and the underlying Precambrian gneisses, marked by the dark line across the middle↑. It is part of the Frontenac Axis. The geology of the area is well-documented.

A cow in the cold water!
From there my driver suggested we visited Chaffeys Lock. More on that part of our drive later! We backtracked a bit, there are so many lakes. The Rideau Canal is the backbone of many of these towns.

What a fun getaway! It's good to get away from daily routine once in awhile. Now I must look at a map and see where Elgin is!

Elgin has some beautiful old buildings and architecture. Too bad about the house that had the fire.
