Goldfish pond news

Jaws has returned. I keep calling him a 'HE', as he is awfully aggressive! Today, Friday, it is about 12 C., and pouring rain. (Yahoo!) I think the weather has turned. This past week, however, JAWS returned. With the cold, he will disappear into his hibernacula, his winter den.

We've gone from 17 frogs to 9. The numbers ebb and flow. We have totally sustainable numbers, lots of frogs.
The goldfish are indoors. I realized that I couldn't sustain the 27 babies, and put back 12 into the pond. That leaves 15 in the fish tank, plus the 9 adults, in the 60-gallon tank.
Despite having about 20+ goldfish, Jaws doesn't seem to go after them. It is curious.

This little leopard frog lost his foot to Jaws earlier in the season.

Then, the garter snake turned up! Annie found her. I moved her back into the forest, away from the cats. Dorah loves bringing snakes indoors. It is about 60 cm (24") long and a hefty brute.

Jaws, the waternake, is back! He took off the foot of one leopard frog this season. We still have 7 frogs in the goldfish pond.

According to www.watersnake.net the snakes over 18" are more likely to move to frogs and and 'larger animals', so I guess your little fishy-wigs are safe. For now. Was that two snakes I spotted at start of video??? I reckon you could charge admission, with all the wild things at your place!!! YAM xx

No, Yam, just a close-up of Jaws. I keep trying to photograph his tongue, but fail! I'm so slow.
I wondered about his size and food sources! Thx.!

Wow -- I watched the video -- that snake is aggressive alright. Poor frogs and fish. There's a whole world of activity going on in that pond. Neat.

I thought at first that Jaws was a snapping turtle.

Interesting video. Sort of creepy, but that's life ... or death.

Jaws is an apt name. An interesting colouration. - Margy

Does Jaws live there or slither in from elsewhere?
