The storm made such a mess!

This is the questionable anniversary of Ice Storm '98. I was living in Osgoode at the time. We had a tree that downed a power line on our street, and we were 10 days without power.
Tuesday, Jan. 4th, 2017, we had an ice storm. But it was NOTHING!!!
There were many without power yesterday. It was around the freezing mark, but slightly above.
Today it is -10 C., and quite cold. They called this a flash freeze.

Ottawa was worse off than we were here in Perth. I took photos of the trees over the course of the day. The storm was done, and it was warmish. Slowly, the clouds parted and all day the ice fixed to the trees melted. So many branches were touching the ground.
Eventually, the trees shed their moisture, and our lovely, old white pine trees stood tall.
The sun came out, and then the winds started up and the snow squalls began!

By the afternoon, the ice coating their needles had melted, and they stood tall again. However, the snow began to fly and the wind was wicked.

What a day it has been!

Two major disasters I remember: Hurricane Hazel (I was a wee girl) I remember sitting on my 17 year old cousins lap while he hugged me tight and prayed. Things were falling down our chimney, the power was out.
Next was the Ice Storm of 1998: Thankfully I live in a very rural location with a nice wood stove. Water was looking like a problem because we didn't have a generator yet...we had just moved back to this place from the city. Thankfully my father in law found a small one we could borrow to at least run the well pump now and again. (Some neighbours were going house to house lending generators to top up tanks, etc)
Lessons learned: Be prepared. Serious weather in the forecast, fill the buckets. Always have a month supply of food in the house.
Oh yeah, we have a full house generator now.

1998 was brutal.

Evergreens tend to be more capable of dealing with freezing rain than hardwoods.

Looks mighty fierce to me, a miracle all the ornament stay on the tree. Do you ever get the snow on your deck? Maybe a wide verandah saves having to shovel it off there.

Streets are pretty icy in CP. i was going to head to the store around the corner, but the walking was so icy that I took the car instead.

Hi Jenn, we ended up with about a ten minute ice pellet storm. You really got hit.
Stay warm and have a good weekend.

I love the snow photos and the pine trees laden with snow. I can see the wind and the snow in the video. Must have been freezing cold there. Do stay warm!

I guess you take those ice storms in your stride by now. But to me that looks quite SOMETHING.Those bird feeders are taking a battering but I notice the birds still visit. Happy New Year, despite the weather.
