World Ocean's Day —respect the earth

With many making a buck off of Muskoka's forests and lakes, we must think about how we use the earth. This screen shot of one small Ontario bedroom community area shows the backyard pools, for example. What a shocking bird's eye view of water wasted.

Muskoka's myth, that we are all rich and live in large homes is bizarre. As with any area, there is variety.

Saving energy is important. Changing the way we use energy and the way we harvest our renewable and non-renewable resources is something every generation must think about clearly. With the massive oil leak:
Damage from spill turning Gulf into ‘biological black hole’" I fear for our earth. We are making bigger and more efficient pollution machines.

Even the G8 Feds, as well as local politicians, led by MP Clement, are marketing Muskoka like mad. They are looking to promote Muskoka, and this is a good thing for tourism, and hopefully will lead to a better understanding of nature.

The Ontario Winter Games brought an estimated nearly $5 million to Muskoka, for example.
One local Muskoka claim is that Swift River Energy Ltd. (SREL) is looking to make a buck off of the Bala Hydro Project and this is bizarre.

The financial investment, and the wise use of renewable energy, warms the heart. This project will bring jobs and improve the area. [Read about the Bala Falls Hydro Project, my posts provide some of the backstory. ]

Most exploit the water, whether they sell time at a lake by the water, or rent boats, build steamships to sail its waters, sell bait and fishing equipment, build hunting/fishing camps, snowmobile trails, or market the products, tools and services that make this a wonderful place to work, live and play.

Whether we honour Muskoka through respect, or create artistic works to celebrate it, we benefit from its beauty, but we must harness its energy wisely, as well. The NIMBYs are going to have to come to terms with good development and bad.

The David Suzuki Foundation sent me some information regarding protecting out oceans. Land, sea and air: we must be vigilant.

I'm so glad to read that you are supportive of the Bala Falls Hydro project. There seems to be a knee jerk reaction to protest change of any sort, regardless of the benefits of a project. Many of these same people use a great deal of electricity in their large, inefficient cottages and yet they want the power to be produced "somewhere else". It is interesting that in this case we are going back and rebuilding something that had been there before and yet people are still protesting!
