Crumbly Acres Bat & Birds

Even the wee Grecian windflowers are a delight in Spring.

The horse chestnut buds are bursting!

Nope, not going to look at the camera! I was indoors, with the camera on the tripod. Swearing at the durn thing. 😧

Do you see it?! It had the right idea.

Yes, another bat. I let it sleep there the whole day, until late afternoon. The fish net accepted the little thing, and I set the net outside on the back railing. When I went back it was gone.

I took a photo from the front deck, the outside.

The daffodils are wonderful. Fred was trimming in between the flowers. He's so helpful.

Now, groundhogs like having at least two entrance/exits. I piled up the wood in the shed over one of his entrances. This one I left open, although I filled in the hole. Fred's been digging out.

Apparently, he's been using the end of the broom!

He's been digging. And digging. What I didn't realize, is that he's digging a new exit. The mounds of dirt seen above↑, has been moved from the front of the shed, along the tunnel, and shoved out of the other hole.

Putting the cleaned bird feeders away in the shed, I noticed said hole. Stepping into the shed, I turned around, and there he was.

We don't have horses, which could hurt them, stepping in a hole. I guess I'll leave it. Determined little twerper!

Now I am sure we have Fred's cousin here. He was so insistent about digging up the kitchen porch posts that we had to live trap and relocate him. Um, ..... nah. Couldn't be.

Whoa—what a scene! Sounds like you’ve got quite the determined little escape artist on your hands. It’s impressive (and slightly alarming) how much effort he’s put into his secret tunnel operation! I can just picture that moment—turning around and catching him red-pawed. Classic. Any plans to patch up the new exit or are you letting him have his grand adventure?

Oh no Fred...you are so persistent, and cute, but really now, we don't want to have anyone step in your hole, like our favorite photographer/videographer! Put a flag on it!

Might want to mark the hole with a little flag to make sure humans don't trip in it. Literally sprained my leg my first year of college falling into a gopher hole. Linda in Kansas

Lovely series of photos! That male cardinal made me laugh; he is beautiful and seems to know it. I find bats fascinating. The groundhog is so cute. Seeing the bat reminds me of a story my parents told me. I am now 68 years old. When I was a baby, apparently, during a very hot summer that Montreal can be known for, my parents had the balcony door open. A bat flew into our apartment (we were on the second floor). My parents and I were all asleep. My mother woke up, feeling something brushing her hair. Thinking it was my father, she asked him to stop. Well, this woke my father, and he assured her he was asleep, that she had woken him up and he was not touching her hair. He got out of bed, turned the light on and here was a bat in my mother's hair! My father, like myself, was an animal lover. He took a broomstick and found a towel, wrapped the bat in the towel and let it back out from the balcony.

Observing Fred, as closely as you do, will teach you a thing or two.

Beautiful photos of the cardinal, a bird we don't see here in the west. It's so lovely outside when trees and plants begin to bloom. There's always something new going on outside.
How fun to see the groundhog peeking up from his ground hole.
