Crumbly Acres

👂I listened to an interesting IDEAS podcast: How the American Cowboy Ignited the Republican Movement

The cowboy — a symbol of the true American man who is anti-government, works independently and protects his family. Historian Heather Cox Richardson calls this rhetoric “cowboy individualism”, and says this myth is the basis for 40-year-old Republican ideology. In this public lecture, Cox Richardson argues that the current Trump administration has taken cowboy individualism to an extreme by gutting the government and centring power.

Then I heard another CBC IDEAS podcast with similar theme: Jesus and John Wayne. It's excellent. (Download the IDEAS podcast to listen to this episode.)

It is based on her book:

Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation is a book written by Kristin Kobes Du Mez and published by Liveright Publishing Corporation. The book covers the history of American evangelicalism and discusses evangelical views on masculinity.

In April of 2024, she spoke at a conference called Beyond Culture Wars, organized by Martin Luther University College (Wilfrid Laurier University) and the Institute for Christian Studies.

We are greening up here!

Blossoming here, bleeding hearts:

Wild violets carpet the 'lawn!'

I've been having fun watching Dratted Red Squirrel. She is either pregnant or lactating.

The critters are on the move!

They are all getting new fur coats!

 The porcupine ambles on by!

 The doe is still pregnant!

With the richest country in the world and in the history of the world, you wouldn’t think that so many would be so anxious to topple the system.

Hello,
Beautiful flowers, I love the bleeding hearts.
Great critter videos, my favorites are the deer and the turkey.
Have a great day and a happy week!

Oh what green you have! It's practically blinding! I've heard the cowboy theory before, and think of my father who wore cowboy boots to work for years...a displaced Texan living in St. Louis. Women didn't have many leading roles in the western movies, unfortunately.

The Bleeding Hearts remind me of my mum who loved them and always had a few going in her garden. Thanks.

That book sounds really interesting. I don't know that I've ever seen that view of your home before. It's lovely. And you have bleeding hearts. I love them. Only one of my plants came up this year. They remind me of my gran.
