Public nudity - save us from them!

UPDATE:  Court told of threats, ATV chase

The public nudity advocate is also facing charges:

Court heard that on that day, three men in a pickup truck travelled on a dirt road through Coldin’s property to reach a cottage where they were going to do some plumbing work. According to Crown attorney Frank Giordano, Coldin raced after the men on an ATV and cut them off after passing at a high rate of speed, which should lead to a conviction on dangerous driving, he argued.

Court heard that police eventually arrived at the scene after Coldin had climbed into an excavator and threatened to remove the vehicle of the three men. OPP officers who attended the scene also testified that they felt threatened by Coldin in the excavator when they arrived. Coldin eventually exited the vehicle after removing his clothes, and a struggle ensued before Coldin was arrested.

In Muskoka, a man who is an avowed nudist has been getting in trouble with the law. It is one thing to prance around your own property flaunting your wanker, but he was boldly walking on a bridge, and on his cell phone in a park, shocking a cute young thing. I posted a comment on the news story, as I was afraid that the right to go nude was precluding the rights of women to NOT see a penis in public!

I am surprised at the arrogance of someone who wants to strut his stuff in public, and through drive-throughs. The fact is that this is a socially unacceptable act. I have no desire to see a strange man's penis. We need to protect those living and playing in Muskoka from this man who wants to play with his toys in public. Shame. There are enough places to go nude without upsetting women.

Then, he ended up going in his car, with 3 friends, through a drive-through. What are they thinking? If one wacko does thing, OK. But when you choose to do it with friends? Totally shocked the young ladies working the headphones behind the window. I wonder when and where he will stop?

I recall a man doing this in Toronto, in a park near where I lived. In those days, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, we had no fears of walking in the city alone. Another time, when I was, perhaps 10, a man sitting in his car near our corner city store, holding up his penis for me to see as I walked by. This is not normal. But I recall the fear, and feeling guilt, as if it was my fault. Is this not bizarre? I told a friend, but not my parents. I didn't have the language.

Such socially unacceptable, sexual actions and behaviours must be recognized as dangerous, and scary to those who witness it. It can escalate, as those who talk about child porn tell us. They need increasingly complex acts to get off on it. Much is focused on Internet Safety, but we still need to educate the public about F2F activities like this.

The remoteness of rural Ontario lends itself to danger. Be careful out there.

Attitudes have consequences. Try comparing the teenage pregnancy, abortion and sexually transmitted infection rates for the USA with those for Denmark, The Netherlands or any other country that is not so uptight about the human body. They know the difference between nudity, indecency, sex and pornography. The consequences of not recognising the differences are very clear.

I will save you the trouble of looking up the numbers. A teenager is the USA is several times more likely to have an abortion, about ten time more likely to become pregnant and several tens of times more likely to catch a sexually transmitted infection. Get the attitudes right and the outcomes will follow.

Is body prejudice really worth the life of even one young person?

Malcolm Boura, I'm not sure the link between societal attitudes towards nudity and teenage pregnancy, abortion and STDs.
I am not writing from the US. I live in Canada. We have many differences between us.

The stats have a more complicated factor than simply attitudes towards nudity. It is complicated by urban/rural issues, access to health care, poverty, education, and cannot be correlated simply by people like myself that prefer men be clothed in my presence.

The highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the world — 143 per 1,000 girls aged 15–19 years — is in sub-Saharan Africa. Their attitudes towards acceptable clothing standards is a significant barrier to your argument passing muster.
The Canadian teenage birth rate in 2002 was 16 per 1000 and the teenage pregnancy rate was 33.9. According to data from Statistics Canada, the Canadian teenage pregnancy rate has trended towards a steady decline for both younger (15-17) and older (18-19) teens in the period between 1992-2002. The highest teen pregnancy rates are in SOME Sub-Saharan countries. “Some” is a very important word because as I read SOME people in Sub-Saharan countries do have very casual attitudes regarding nudity and SOME other cultures in Sub-Saharan Countries are very intolerant regarding public nudity. In addition to that it is customary for woman to marry at very young ages in SOME Sub-Saharan countries.
Regardless, I think the more research you do into the nudist lifestyle the more you will realise that it is a healthier lifestyle. Malcolm is right. The countries, in the developed world, with lowest rates of teen pregnancies are those countries that are more tolerant regarding social nudity such as the Netherlands and Spain. The fact that there is a decline in teen pregnancies seems to be a global phenomenon indicating there are other factors at play then how acceptable social nudity is.
This society seems to be suffering from gymnophobia. The fear of seeing the nude human body or being seen nude. I’m not saying that the way Mr. Colden went about bringing this issue to light was correct. Educating may be better then the “in your face” guerrilla tactics he used. Maybe it’s time to ask ourselves why the sight of another person in the nude makes us feel uncomfortable. The ask is it reasonable to feel that way. Look at sites such as the federation of Canadian Naturist, learn about the lifestyle and social nudity then comment once you’ve done that. You opening comments using words like “prance”, “flaunting” and “wanker” show an incredible ignorance and lack of journalistic integrity. Anytime someone wants to talk about social nudity an make it sound more salacious then it really is they use words like “prance”, “flaunt” and “wanker”. Next time try “walk”, “expose” and “penis”. I’m surprised you didn’t use the word flopping as in ‘his wanker was flopping all over the place’. That would have made it sound really dirty.

@anonymous, I believe you give me more credit than is due. I am a BLOGGER, not a journalist. I am a wife, mother, grandmother, who likes to do research, as I am a lifelong learner. Most of my blog friends love creating fun posts. We love playing with language like 'wanker'. It generates the sense of the bizarre I intended.

I appreciate your editing of my post... OK. No, I don't. But I post your comment as it is laughable. The Naturists need to figure out how to make a case in another way. At this time it is not socially acceptable to shock young women in public. Women who may never have seen a penis. Full stop. I respect the right of Naturists to do so on private land. But to tie my aversion to strange penises to STDs and teen pregnancy is stupid.

Women must protect themselves. I carefully chose my nouns, since it it really silly to go through a drive-through, with friends, in Canada, in the nude. They have two seasons: bugs and snow in Muskoka.

I am presenting my viewpoint. As a woman. In a world where women are murdered by their significant others at a higher rate than soldiers have been killed in the US 'War on Terror', I fear what a naked mane might mean to my safety. Yes, I may have gymnophobia, but it is tied more to my fear of sex and violence, especially with the latest crome story of the Russell Williams case. He used his hands, fists, and penis for the purpose of violence and control. Until we can separate paraphilia from nudity, I reserve the right to choose which penises I want to view!
