Crumbly Acres Critters

The birds are back! Tons of them. Grackles, Red-wing Blackbirds, Starlings, Phoebes, it is terrific!

🐻Bear season is upon us. Hibernation is over in Ontario. Bears are hungry.

The mother bears, and/or her suitors, kick the 2-year-old bear out of their territory – usually in May. The young bears have to look for new a habitat. It usually affects us, since the youngsters are desperate for food and haunt bird feeders. Often I see them on the trailcams. Not in the flesh fur!

It was 2022 that I had a shock. It was self-inflicted. We'd had a bear in May, and I put the feeder away until July, wanting to see the rose-breasted grosbeak, I put it out. Whoopsie!

In Ottawa in 2023, police shot and killed a young bear. If a bear is roaming backyards, it can be deadly.
Thursday, they had another bear which was tranquillized, this time, and relocated.

Phoebe hasn't decided on a nest site yet.

Phoebe is back! I love the song. I went for a walk in the forest with Cinnamon. You can see Cinn roaring by me at the end of the video.

The Flickers are so interesting.

The Northern Flicker has been working the ground for bugs and grubs.

Big rains predicted today. We'll see what happens.

Hello Jenn,
I love seeing the bears, even though I do not want them hanging around our yard. We had one pass through last week, it got into our trash can. I love your bear images, the Phoebe and the Flicker. Thank you for sharing your link and critter post. Take care, have a great weekend. PS, thank so much for leaving me a comment.

The bears are active year round here but Spring brings all the wild critters out even more. Love your photos. Hope that bear stays away!

We now have better bear-proof trash cans, and so far haven't had an invasion of bear-snatching-bags of trash and carrying them to a place on the grounds to investigate...though bears have been sighted several times in the area. I didn't know flickers liked to eat off the ground...as I always see them on trees (which is rare) Now I want to see/hear a phoebe!

It is a wonderful place for nature that you have.

You have more action in your area than anyone. I think I'd pass on the bears -- cute until you stop and think about it!

It's hard not to go 'awww' when we see the bears - but definitely to be kept at distance! As always, love your critters. YAM xx

I acquired a bird feeder and a bag of seed, but as soon as I put it up, I was inundated with hungry greedy tree rats (AKA cute fluffy squirrels) and I just don't have anywhere safe where it's birds only. So I'll probably donate the whole thing to my son. No bears here thank goodness.

Love your birds - and would love to see the bears too.

Our trash, all that, is in a metal building, door closed. But, yes, the bird feeders. I, too, long for the Rose-breasted Grosbeak. One year we ran the feeder out on a line, but it was not squirrel proof. Haven't had a junior bear for several years now, thank goodness.

Lots of flickers here. They've been feeding in the yard. No bears though!
