Our poor old pine trees! Here in Perth we had about 20cm, all told, over three days, with another small storm expected today. The snow was very heavy, the first day, and the top branches dropped snow onto the bottom ones. Crack, down they went. I estimate they are 100 - 150-year-old white pines, blissfully saved by Ozzie Love who built our house.

I spent 90 minutes cleaning off the lower branches that I could reach. Hubby did some the day before, too. I should have been more vigilant.

There is a trick to it. Take the snow off of the lowest branches first. When the higher branches drop their snow, it will pile up on the lower ones and cause them to break. Use a broom, or a roof rake, as I did. You do't want to damage the branches. Don't whack them, you'll break them. Make sure you have a hood on your coat, or the snow will drop into your collar! Oh, yes. Don't look up as you work. Uh, Hmmf!

Amazing radar shots. I am fascinated with them. The red is rain, green snow, blue snow. Sigh.

I went out yesterday and shovelled the front walk three times, the driveway I did twice. Good exercise!
And I didn't break a nail!

In the dark, it was still snowing.
 It snowed all night, so back out I go today. I can see poor 'labbit's' tracks in the snow, seeking food. The deer have uncovered my garden  foliage, looking for food.


I'm going to pace myself and do it in stages, as I did yesterday. I was much easier getting the early slush off of the driveway, and hopefully, today, the snow will be light. My arms are sore, using the snowblower!

I tried with the shovel, but it was too heavy. It was like shovelling fudge!

After the snow fell, it blew around. I blew 4" of snow off of the driveway on Friday. On Saturday, it blew another 15 cm a lot more!

Snomageddon 2013

Whew! Smomageddon again. We had a big dump of 60 - 150 cm in Muskoka in December, 2009. This was nothing like that. The Lake Effect snow meant that the winds pick up moisture. The winds just blew and blew over the two days, Dec. 16.
Here, February 8th, big winds and lots of snow. Dawn has come, as it tends to do! The sun on the bosom of the snow, is a beautiful sight.

I love the radar. You can see the clouds and swirling winds.

The blizzard is a combination of three weather systems: an Alberta clipper of cold air, a Texas low of warm, moist air and a powerful storm that began in the Carolinas.

Below are total snow amounts reported as of 1:00 AM Saturday.

No sooner did I use the snowblower on the driveway, than it needed to be done again. This was the frist 4" from Friday. Today, Saturday, I shall attack it again!
