Busy feeders – time for a rethink

I've had to switch bird feeders! You can see why! They can stick their tongues right into the opening, and it gathers a female/yearling crowd. This one works better, and has only sunflower seed, not so much fun as the cracked corn, finch food and peanuts of the good stuff.

Then there is the deer shed hunt. Tigger, we've determined, has lost his antlers, as has his twin brother. There is another buck, however, who is hanging around. I'm going to call him Jake. He's much more shy than Tigger, and took off down the hill when I went outside.

We spotted him yesterday afternoon (Wednesday), and he'd lost one antler. It was 4 p.m., and I donned my outdoors clothes and tromped around. No joy. He has come back this morning, with only
one antler. I have hopes. It's another forest trek. They lose the 2nd antler within 24 hours, they experts tell me. You can see, by their breath, that it is a cold one. This doesn't deter me. It's warm down in the wetland, with no wind and on this, a sunny day. I spent two hours in the bush on Tuesday, and worked up a sweat, unzipping my coat. That's where I lost a glove, too.

I'll let you know! I am not hopeful, but it is good exercise!

lovely photos Jenn. Cold at -16C, but at Sunpeaks where our daughter and family are, -22C right now, Guess they will need more than 2 extra layers today, they said an arctic blast was coming!!! Keep warm and find that glove.

Wonderful deer moments. Our county has discovered chronic wasting disease in the deer herd so we're all worried about that. Our DNR has begun a culling program to reduce its chances of spreading. I dunno if it going to work....:(

It was just a matter of time before dropping the antlers was going to happen. With luck you'll find it.

So the deer walk right through your yard? That must be neat. We've seen deer but not in the yard.

Sweet of you to put out food for the deer ;>)..... they are so pretty and I do hope they and you survive the hard winter. But I wouldn't want them eating all of my bird seed either.
