Book Review: Plastic Island

Plastic Island is a wonderful picture book that tells the story of plastics that are thrown away.

It was Oprah who first made this a mainstream issue on popular television, where I heard about it. Author David Cuellar heard it from a fellow hiker and decided to write a book for young children.

The middle of the Pacific Ocean hold a stationary garbage heap about twice the size of Texas, swirling in a vortex of shameful pollution. It hurts animals, and is caused by humans.

That said, it is a delightful book, which connects the child to the eagle in the sky and the fish in the seas. The illustrations are lovely. I am looking forward to reading it to my grandchildren, although I often wonder if we are preaching to the choir when we talk to young kids. They seem to grasp it well.
