Random September photos!

Drive safely out there. Somebody loves this
new, young driver!
September photos...blue skies, a bit cooler, but what a wonderful season it is.

Poor hubby does all the driving, he doesn't LIKE driving, in order for me to do drive-by shootings. (Sometimes he will pull over for me...) 'Stop. Stop. Stop!'
I have to post the photos for him!

Book Review: The Debaters

Barth Hoogstraten
At first, I thought this might be a dry sort of book. Hubby complains endlessly about some of his history book authors (he's read THEM ALL!). It is difficult bringing history to life. This book did just that for two interesting men who shaped and changed history as they both fought the corrupt Church leadership in Rome.

We are in the middle of an election campaign, and the US is leading up to one. We see debates on TV, and the Internet. Imagine how difficult it was in this era, requiring letters traveling on months-long journeys, as well as religious leaders.  I'm sure debates are far less listened to now, than in the past, however. Our clever ruling party, The Conservatives, are somehow refusing to attend debates in ridings. (E.g., Ottawa Conservative candidates refuse to participate in Oct. 5 debate) My son-in-law, Jean-Luc Cooke, is running in Nepean, and is looking for a good debate,he's booked in six this election! (Sorry, rant over!)

Back to the book, which is timely, in that there are many issues surrounding religion in the world, both in politics, and in news. What with the Pope recently visiting the US, and the UN, this book truly gives some insight into the workings of the papacy. I am neither a Catholic nor Protestant, nor church member, at this time in my life. I still want to learn about this part of human history.

I would recommend this book. It is a good read, and ties in the two men's lives, and how it is that Catholic hierarchy kept the real teachings of the Bible from its adherents until Luther translated it for the commoners. It explains the Diet of Worms (1521), and how profoundly it impelled Martin Luther forward, as well as the machinations of the election of a pope. It illustrates the saga of Luther's 95 Theses, nailed to a church door, and ensuring his excommunication and religious revolt by the common human, attempting to come to terms with their religion on earth. The sellling of indulgences, and influential men of the time: popes, kings and those who corrupted the Church.
Diet of Worms

He has created dialogue between characters, and this creates a far better picture than a dry read. His characters are rich and meaningful. Even his women, few who had a place in religious history, are strong. I really found it tied in with the skeletal knowledge I had of the Reformation, as well as these place points in history. Well done, Barth Hoogstraten!

From the publisher:

An understanding occurred to Barth Hoogstraten nearly a decade ago, when his brother leant him a book on Desiderius Erasmus and Pope Adrianus VI “Aside from their names and basic backgrounds, It dawned on me that I knew next to nothing about either Erasmus or Martin Luther; two of history’s greatest minds whose actions led to the reformation and positive change in the Catholic Church,” Hoogstraten said."
After years of research, Barth Hoogstraten published “The Debaters”. The book offers a glimpse of the final days of medieval Europe at one of the most crucial turning points in history. Readers experience first hand the personality conflicts between Luther, a sheltered family man and Erasmus, a bastard child, world traveler and one of the greatest humanists the world has ever seen.

Moony me and the lunar eclipse

I grabbed my camera and tripod, and a flashlight. My hands were really sore from my cat rescue attempt (the saga is here), and the loss of my client. Then there is the anti-Muslim sentiment by those running PM Harper's campaign. It is a sad perspective on the world.
Happily Buster is home and safe this morning, after chasing the moon shine. Dweeb.
The tripod wouldn't set up properly. I was rising to the challenge, when the clouds rolled in. I gave up. Fiddling around with the settings...it was too frustrating.
I am appreciating the wonderful photos people have taken around the world, they are everywhere! This is an explanation of the event.

The next super moon will be in 2033. I can see hauling myself and my walker outdoors to grab a shot. As if!

Today it will rain, and I will finish my sewing projects. I did house cleaning yesterday, such as it was. There is a saying for that: 'a lick and a promise'? Is that it?!

Another summery day: Sunday Sketches

That was a lovely afternoon. I decided to go out and sit and do a sketch. I haven't done one since my client passed away in the summer. This is sort of a composition of things in my front yard.
Sunday Sketches.

Hubby suggested we go for a drive, which we did.

We did some shopping in Westport, then ate at The Cove.

On the way home, we were 2.5 km away Gillian GPS told me, and we spotted a black cat on a fence. All woods, only a few houses. 'Surely that can't be Buster,' said hubby...
It was. He was near where I'd seen a doe and fawn a few years ago.

I got out of the car, coaxed him back over the fence (15 min.), while cars roared up and down the road. I was nearly at the car, clutching him tightly when two cars came along from either direction. I kept hanging on and then he scratched both my hands, 3 deep cuts, and took off back over the fence. Little beggar.

We arrived home and I washed thoroughly, hubby bandaged me up. I phoned my client, to check that we were on tomorrow, Monday. No answer. I called her niece and found she had died this afternoon. About the time I was doing my sketch.

Buster is still AWOL, even though I went across the highway into the woods and called some more. He was on a mission somewhere.

I planted two apple trees!

This is one of my favourite poems with my young granddaughters.

Way up high in the apple tree
Two little apples smiled at me
I shook that tree as hard as I could
Down came the apples
Mmmm they were good!

Yes, it's the season for apples and canning. I'm not much for that these days. We just don't eat that much! However, I know our deer, and Butch racoons, and the bees would love apple trees. You're supposed to plant two for pollination purposes. I did that Saturday, September 26th.

Speaking of Butch, I have the bird feeders out now. I was peering at the lovely moon last night, and saw two young racoons, Butch 2A and 2B under the front feeder. Out in the back yard, there were 3 clearing up under the back feeder! Those wicked Blue Jays like to spread the seed, as do the woodpeckers.

Butch
Hubby suggested we go visit one of our favourite local nurseries, Hillside Gardens, and we did. We bought some straw bales. Once there, I suggested we buy a couple of apple trees, since our cherry tree died with weather issues. He thought that would be good. Then, he though we should think about where to put them. I said, NO!!! Let's buy them and THEN figure it out! That's my style! (Did I mention, both my husband's have been accountants?!)

I had wonderful helpers digging two holes! Buster got bored fairly quickly, but he checked that I had everything on the cart. Daisy and Annabelle were right there with me for the duration.
