Rideau Canal Locks in the fall

The Rideau Canal Locks are a  huge part of southeastern Ontario. They are now closed for the season, and work is being done on many of them. They are old, and the government is putting money into refurbishing them.

Newly announced:
Over the next five years, Parks Canada will invest $2.6 billion to rehabilitate infrastructure assets within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada.
Oct 3, 2016 - Parks Canada is investing an unprecedented $3 billion dollars over 5 years to support infrastructure work to heritagevisitorwaterway and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national ... stone repair, repointing, grouting and repair of the stone arch dam toe drain system.

The site is so calm, and peaceful. Water rushing down.

The buoys were COVERED in zebra mussels.

Narrows Locks on the Rideau

Lots of geese and swans. Some stay a long time. The first two photos are from Dec., 2015!

There is a group of Canada Geese in the foreground, a group of swans further away. You can see how the swans were chasing the geese away!

Hello, great shots of the birds. I love the swans and geese. The zebra mussels are an awful invasive species. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend!

The swans and geese were enjoying themselves in the water. I like the cute "bottom-up" of the swan! Lol!

I think it is really good to see this repair work done, and to preserve history. What a feat all those years ago, without modern machinery and technology. Lovely swans.

Lovely shots!

I just had an idea: maybe golf courses where the geese are a problem should employ swans to chase them off?

I saw similar locks in the Erie Canal when I visited Wayne's home town of Rome, New York. They are working on revitalizing our dam on Powell Lake, but they means a private electric generating company. But at least our lake level will be maintained. If it dropped to the original level we would lose 24 feet of water and most float homes would go aground. Ours is in 80 feet of water so with a few adjustments to the cables we would survive. - Margy

Oh, I am envious of your Whistling (Tundra) Swan!!! We only get Mute Swans round here - about as ubiquitous as gulls... and Canada Geese &*> YAM xx
