Rain, and pumpkins!

We had a windy day on Saturday, and a storm rolled in. Sunday morning it was 17 C., when highs are usually just under 10 C. and it is surreal. Our Ottawa family ate dinner out in their solarium! Highly unusual for November.

☔Ontario
Sunday morning grand total of 5 mm.

The winds did some damages to hydro wires.

British Columbia
British Columbia had another atmospheric river, not as bad as the one that hit last year. You can see where they had snow in the mountains.

It's interesting that B.C. Hydro doesn't list a total of outages. The CBC news stated 330,000 without power. Jesse's in-laws in Surrey were out, which they posted on Facebook Saturday afternoon.

We carried on. I did some work in the yard. I think my gardens are done. I put out red ribbons and my Remembrance Day wreath. Cyclists, and motorcycles were out all day, roaring by. The Canada flag, designed by the late Curtis Wilson, has been hung.

I don't mind 🍁fall chores, but when I have to redo them... The wind uncovered JB's water fountain. I had to use a towel to get the water out, and realign the tarp.

It's been so warm (for November!) that the bugs are out again. They were feasting on the pumpkins.

The clouds rolled in.

It was fun down at the trailcam. I took two big pumpkins down there over two days, and split them open. By the next day ALL of the seeds were gone!

I know who was responsible!

🕰 I hope you coped with time change, if you had to go through that ordeal! I woke at 3 a.m., feeling as if it was 4, and didn't get back to sleep on Sunday. I tried to have a nap, but that didn't happen. We had to turn clocks back an hour.

The cats were quite happy in the Muskoka Room. It was 24 C.

Monday morning I slept until 3 a.m., thought I'd get up and get a drink of water to try reset myself. Standing up, I could see the motion detector light was on down below. A fine looking coyote was right out back. They are beautiful animals. It was looking for frogs or mice friends in the grass. I held my breath. Nutmeg was hunkered down watching. Cinnamon jumped off of the table onto the Muskoka Room floor, and landed with a loud thump. Off went Coyote! Despite the excitement, I did manage to sleep in until 5:30!

Our eavestrough replacement

Our eavestrough was in sad shape. It looked pretty bad. The house dates back to about 1985-ish. We had new shingles put on awhile back. Someone had painted the eaves twice, over the base coat of dark brown. Now it is all flaking. Painting eavestrough doesn't work with Ontario's freeze/thaw temperatures.

Oct. 2020 – I had to repair the downspout, during a pandemic. It was a common problem when we got big dumps of rain. We had 🎥55 mm one day one year

What has been happening in the big storms is the eavestrough has pulled away from the fascia, and the water has been running in under the roof, and dripping in the Muskoka Room. This is not good.

We decided to get some quotes. We phoned a couple of companies, and didn't hear back. Finally, one company returned us a quote, but didn't specify that they would remove the old eaves, nor did they actually inspect the house. Company #1 quoted us on 154', based on viewing the house via Google or something. Thing is, we don't have eavestrough on either end of the house.

No mention of:

  • Remove and take away old stuff
  • Possibly new fascia
  • Warranty period
  • Aluminum($2/') vs. vinyl ($1/foot but we have woodpeckers and squirrels!)
  • The fancy stuff is much more expensive.
Looking at the companies online, they only seem to offer the really expensive stuff with the gutter guards. That just won't work with the heavy storms we get. It overflows as it is. Plus, they are very expensive.

Company #2 – we haven't heard from. It's been a week.

Friday, April 28th
Company #3 – referred to us from our local Facebook group, don't seem to offer anything but the ones with gutter guards. He finally phoned and will visit Monday or Tuesday.
Company #4 – I ended up registering online for Rona. They can give me an estimate, and someone to install it. It's not a complicated job! They emailed in response Fri., April 29th, saying they would be back in touch within two business days. It's Tuesday, May 3rd, so far nothing.

May 2nd
Company #3 – He visited May 2nd, it was raining at his job site and he'd stopped work. He will give us a quote. He is booked until July. He won't replace the fascia. He's been doing this since 1974!
May 3rd – JB visited the place in town, Company #2, Above the Rest, and they said they do fascia. No quote yet, though.
May 4 – Company #3: estimate from Dobbie, no removal of the old stuff, or replacing fascia. He was booked for weeks.
May 6 – Company #4: Rona, in Carleton Place. Their confirmation email says they will get back to me in 2 working days! I contacted them online 7 days ago. Nada.
Company #2, Above the Rest, visited Friday at 4:30. They measured 146'. The owner came, and took all our notes about the house, the colour of the new stuff, vinyl or aluminum.
May 18th  – Company #2, Above the Rest, gave us a quote. It was competitive pricing.
                 – Coincidentally, Rona emailed. It could be several weeks before they can send someone to measure for a quote. Also, they charge $85 for a quote. They don't need our business!
June 17th – a phone message from Above the Rest, can they come Saturday, June 18th?
June 18th – It was the day. I saw a man walk by the house at 9 a.m., wearing a warm hoodie, looking up at the eaves. It was a cold morning, but we were in business.

We had our lights flicker, there were quite a few people without power from the winds that ripped through the province. We were happy to keep out power, as they needed it for their tools.

They began in the front, and there was much action. The 'Red Ripper' ripped it off the fascia, which was fine, BTW.

The cats were not impressed. Cinnamon first went downstairs. Nutmeg stood looking through the front door at the strangers standing there. She moved to the cat tower. Then, when the crew moved to the backyard, ladders and all, Cinn perched himself on the second from the top step leading down to the basement.
Nutmeg disappeared. This is why! The Red Ripper was working on the roof. It's quite the tool.

Ta da!

By 2:30 they were done, my plants hanging back in place. I'll have to wash down the railings, again, non-mental note. The cats had calmed down and had a bite to eat. We have a new bill to pay, but it is a relief to get this done!

Rainstorms

There were issues. It leaked on the back deck. They came and fixed that. Then there is the front. We've still issues with the new eavestrough. It sags in the middle, right over the door. I've emailed them with videos.

UPDATE: July 25

They came and fixed the eavestrough, again. (I'd sent a video.) They seemed grumpy, dropping the F* bomb on top of our eaves as they undid screws and changed the level of the eaves. Left without saying they were done. They warned me of the debris in the gutter, but it wasn't much truthfully. The angle of the trough needs to go from the high point to this, the drain point over the downspout.

This is the fascia I thought they should have replaced. They told me they hadn't needed to during the original installation. We shall have to see what the next big dump of rain brings.

UPDATE: July 30

Before and after:

I think they are as irritated with this job as we are. They turned up, didn't ring the doorbell. They worked. They left. No face-to-face contact at all. We'll need a storm to let us know if it works. I am glad they came back. It's been such a trial.

Hormones Part IV – feline aggression

Sat., Jan. 25 – evening

We were watching Along Came a Spider (2001) .Excellent, Morgan Freeman, kidnapping, suspense all for distraction.

In desperation, JB has been reading the insert on the Feliway package.
"Diffuser is not recommended for overt aggression between cats..."
It's a bloody myth. We've been bashing our heads against the wall. We're done. Annabelle will go back to the vet, where we got her.

Annie slept in the spare room. The kittens were free to play.

Sat., Jan. 25 – morning

Feliway is in the living room, the spare room, and on Annie's collar. We'll cross our fingers. The deadline is next Friday, Jan. 31st.
Annie was in the spare room overnight. No banging on the door. The kitten had two stints out in the Muskoka room. They quite like it. Cinn came in and had a play, so we brought in Nutmeg, and put Annie back in the room.

The new litter medium, the wood pellets, are working out well. Annabelle stunk up the room with a big poo, but I took them out, and all was well!

Friday, Jan. 24
We brought home Nutmeg, who had her stitches removed. Dr. Brianna gave us Feliway spray.
We have been putting the collar around Annie's neck since Tuesday, and putting the Feliway on it. It can take up to 7 days, they say.
JB went out shopping to beat our predicted Saturday ice rain storm. (It ostly snowed!) We put out two Feliway diffusers: one in the living room, another in the spare room. We kept Annie in there overnight.
It's $60 for the two pieces, $30 for a refill. JB bought two refills.

Nutmeg and Cinnamon were encouraged to visit the Muskoka Room. When I checked on them later, they were happily sleeping, curled up around one another in the small cat bed. They moved when I peeked, of course.

I let one kitten in, I thought it was Cinnamon. He went into the kitchen to eat. JB was in there. He said, "You let Nutmeg in!"
"That's Cinnamon," I replied. Annabelle came in the room, roared at the kitten, trapped her in the pantry. I realized I made a mistake. It was Nutmeg. I am so stressed out with this. My stress symptoms are increasing.

They slept together on the couch. At one point, I looked over and they had their paws on their sibling's shoulder making an X!

PART III: Plan D Friday, Jan. 24

We're keeping Nutmeg isolated from Annie. Annabelle is out in the night. Then, when she sits and sleeps, we put her into our bedroom and let Nutmeg out to play. We made a mistake and while I was on a 2-hour conference call for ODPRN, we forgot about Annie in the bedroom. She peed on my cotton t-shirt, which soaked it all up, fortunately.

We have plan D. We will try Feliway on Annabelle's collar. We can't put it in all the rooms of the house, but this could work. It could take 7 days to work, if it is going to work.

Once Nutmeg gets her stitches out on Friday, she is less fragile. Hopefully, the hormones in both kittens will work their way out of their systems, too. Annie hunts Nutmeg down, and just goes for her. Nutmeg is cautious. They are fine early in the morning, when they are hungry, then things go awry.

If this doesn't work, the vet has said they will take Annie back. She was rescued by one of their former employees, and that is where we adopted her from.
