Playtime, sparrow, forest play, pansies; joy in retirement

We took a walk down to the wetland the other day.
By 'we' I mean me and a cat and two kittens.

I think this a song sparrow. I am always corrected by those who know better! Hubby was looking for info on his stomach issue and all he found were contradictory pieces of information.

When I was researching my M.Ed. in curriculum and technology I read a comment by an expert who call cyberspace the great garbage dump in the sky! I've done a lot of writing about technology, as well other educational pieces. It was difficult retiring. From being out the door and at school by 7:15 every day. Keeping up to date on pedagogical research, internet safety, bullying and the like. Then there were new curriculum demands, special education reforms, computer generated report cards (which we piloted in 1991) but it was a rewarding career, despite principal bullying (which is more common than we may think).

Then, upon retirement, I sought things to fill my time and keep me sharp, as well as being useful. I taught Creative Writing to men in the Beaver Creek Minimum Security Penitentiary. It was really interesting and a lesson in the penal system. We moved and I could not do that anymore, but I learned so much about teaching adults!

Now, I fill my time doing hospice volunteer work, giving palliative care to families, advocating for seniors by writing my blog on healthcare (e.g., Rate my hospital - CBC The Fifth Estate)
as well as this blog. It's a habit to be a lifelong learner, and I am grateful to be able to search out answers to puzzles in nature and the world around me.
This day's walk"
The cats were looking for mice friends in the dry leaves.
Dorah got bored and climbed a tree.
When we finished that project, me and my helpers planted some pansies.
There was a turkey out in the backyard, too.
A busy day!
It was a very warm day.
Dorah climbs a tree
Buster and Daisy huntin'
She's a tired, happy girl
I just missed a shot as he was displaying for love.
He was mad I stepped out on the deck.

She was hunkered down on a mossy rock

This pansy was a bit dry.

Russell Williams - an awful story

This man has committed atrocious acts. I cannot believe this. It is simply fodder for a Law and Order episode. To go from stealing panties, to sexual assault, to murder is a scary thought. As he escalated, the violence was added to his modus operandi.

WE PASSED THE SCENE: Tweed's #37, search for evidence Oct. 1st

What can we learn from it?

What I find interesting are the victims in the court room. Bravely facing this man. Good for them. To face their attacker and face their fears is important. It will haunt them if they do not. They have to take their power back from this man who assaulted them, psychological and physical assaults that can send them into developing issues.

For the parents of the victims, I feel the greatest grief. I hope they can climb out of it.
The trial was covered in real time...it spoke of photos of him masturbating while wearing women's under wear. The underwear he stole.
CoveritLive.com wrote:

The brother and mother of Jessica Lloyd sat, staring at him, showing virtually no emotion, as Lloyd's mother held on to a large framed photo of her late daughter.
Count 79 is the second sexual assault. Laurie Massicotte was the victim. She was attacked September 30, 2009. A publication ban protecting her name was revoked after she spoke to Maclean's.

Russell Williams in the news

A 21-year-old woman, whose name was was originally protected by a publication ban, awoke. She was immediately tied up, blindfolded, sexually assaulted, and warned that if she didn't co-operate, she and her baby would die. The intruder took repeated photos of the woman's naked body before fleeing the scene.
Astonishingly, authorities now claim that Williams returned to that same house two more times in the days after the assault, searching for keepsakes.

One victim, who has kept her right to privacy, has launched a public suit ($2.4 million for the "harsh, vindictive, malicious, horrific and reprehensible" assault. Good for her. I hope she gets satisfaction.

Six weeks after the arrest William's wife, Mary Elizabeth Harriman (Heart and Stroke Foundation associate director),  took over his share of the family home. Rumours are that it was a deal to shield his assets. According to Ontario Family Law she'd have the right to half the home. It sounds suspicious to me. The home was bought for $693, 819! Some needs to pay for the therapy this victim will need. I know how difficult it was when my parents died of natural causes. This trauma can haunt for ever.

The charges:
  • two counts each of sexual assault and unlawful confinement
  • 61 of breaking and entering
  • 11 of attempted breaking and entering
  • 10 of breaking and entering with intent to commit an indictable offence.
He pled guilty to all of them. In fact confessed, they say, once arrested. No wonder he tried to commit suicide in jail. While teachers teach Internet Safety, it is time to teach safety in face to face situations, in rural areas. The OPP apologized to Miss Massicote. With unreported thefts in the beginning of this saga, and break-ins, they didn't realize the extent of the problem. We have to report.
Murder victims Jessica Lloyd and Cpl. Marie Comeau
The Fifth Estate has a photo timeline on the Williams case: I'd rather focus on the timelines of the young lives we have lost.
The body of Jessica Lloyd (left) was located off Carry Road, The Globe and Mail reports, in the Municipality of Tweed.    Corporal Marie France Comeau, the other victim.

What have we learned? Just like all situations...
Shout No. Go. Tell.
This is what we taught students in the early days of my teaching career.
A wolf in seemingly respectable clothing. Many children are sexually assaulted by people they know. William's neighbour was one victim, as well.

Some has to speak truth to power. This man victimized some one under his command. Atrocious. Did no one know? I am dubious.

Us old farts on the Internet

    This just out:
Public beware - motor vehicle insurance scam in Ontario

NORTH BAY, ON, May 27 /CNW/ - The Canadian Anti-fraud Centre (formerly Phonebusters) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are warning people who are seeking and obtaining automobile insurance, that fraudsters have been advertising fraudulent insurance premiums in Ontario newspapers and on websites.

Signs consumers need to be aware of are:

        -  Unusually low rates
        -  Everyone is accepted
        -  A phoney, invalid insurance slip is mailed or emailed to buyers after
they have sent their premium through Western Union or Money Gram.

I have blogged since 2005, with students. (Since retirement for fun.) We integrated technology to provide a more holistic experience. All of my students had an on-line portfolio of their work. Our parent-teacher, student-led conferences were primarily done on-line.
Scared the hell out of some of my principals, the others embraced my forward thinking.

I have given presentations on Internet Safety to parents and students. It is well worth it to monitor your children on the computer. Check browser history. Keep the computer in an open area. No webcams in bedrooms. See more at:

Since the time I have been using computers in the classroom (1989) and creating computer generated report cards (1991), all has, of course, evolved. The layers of technology many of us do not understand. Page rankings, the data a stranger may keep on you and yours, requests for passwords (phishing) we have learned to eschew.

With many seniors in Muskoka's population (15%) we are a vulnerable group, especially if we do not understand the ways in which we may be preyed upon. Most of us understand about chat rooms, and the danger that those on-line may not be who they seem.

Critical thinking skills are crucial in this age. Too many are scammed, with identify theft, hackers, malware, trojans, a virus, pharming, phishing (sucking you into giving your password to a stranger),  pornnapped Internet sites, typosquatting and mortgage fraud, being things that irk me. There is a whole new vocabulary designed for new, illegal activities.

    Google typosquatting:
Typosquatting Costs Google Advertisers $497M/Yr Google may be profiting from typosquatters at the expense of online advertisers, according to a study from Harvard University professor...

Another scam up here, people phoning seniors telling them their grandkids are in jail and demanding bail money. Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is called vishing, a derivation of phishing, all designed to conduct fraud over the phone.

I don't know if I have it right, but I do know what I see and read. And, like people yelling into cell phones in a restaurant, I want users of modern technology to think about what they are doing and why. New technology requires new ethical principles. Yes, you can use your crackberry in my presence, but just don't! Similarly, when I am being served in a store, don't answer the phone, or at least put them on hold and finish MY sale, rather than giving preference to the customer on the phone.

People of my generation learned to use computers in the work place when they first arrived on the scene. Now, the activities are blurry, as well as the morals, ethics and values. You can tell how old I am by the computer card scan on the left. That was while I was in high school in the 70s.

Immoral thieves target seniors, vulnerable luddites, but also those who survive by using their artistic talents; visual arts, literacy skills, photography or pottery come to mind, should have their property protected. The other vulnerable part of our population are the artisans who are subject to the vagaries of the climate and the tourists.

The young 'uns laugh at us old farts whom they accuse of not understanding technology, but we were the ones who learned to use Skype with grandkids. For fun, not profit!

Many of us are on Facebook (FB) to socialize with kids or Grand Kids (and we think they are all grand!). Many of us send digital photos back and forth. We e-mail and talk to our kids on Skype. It is a marvellous tool. It is the best thing about technology!

Most of us are creeped out by the Facebook breaches of privacy, most of us do not undertand, and this is an issue of which bloggers need to be aware. It comes down to Internet Safety and wise use of the technology. The latest scam, is someone bulk commenting to me on YouTube and various others:

    " love your videos.
you should check out this website: [site deleleted by me!] , it wil [sic] help you get more subscribers and views on your videos really easily.
Sent to: canadianshow, newlifek9rescue, dfeclan, harrisonford96, donnadulcinea, tigerkim2, shadic253, j3nnyj1ll, artreflection, hulkgreenlaser175, fingerlive98, supersilverina, bumpinalong, villedaluz, ultrafur, hanshorseback, crystalcatdesigns, danielbreslauer, lancerdoubleosleven, britchesaandhose"

All they want, of course, is your cell phone number. I don't know anyone that know that. It is for outgoing and emergencies.

Now, my videos are for family, friends, and fans. Period. For fun. My blog is to share the pitfalls and the joys of being in Muskoka, or on the 'net. I used to teach this to students, parents and colleagues. It keeps my hand in and it is fun. But be warned. Think about how you use the Internet.

Spam & pornography & Internet Safety

For the umpteenth time, I have had another 'comment' from someone who doesn't realize I scan and moderate comments. With the high number of hits my blogs receive, I am at risk for such.

It is so frustrating. I went to the main webpage, and, appalled, spotted some incredibly shocking images. I cannot imagine what children think when they come across these photos showing women fondling and licking men's sexual organs. Truly, this kind of thing fantasize the sex act and makes men think that this is their due.

It inures men watching, to need increasingly erotic images in order to get an erection. Which is why pedophiles need increasingly escalating images to get off on it. What can you do about it? Very little, except screening your comments. I did go to the www address of the host website, and was incredibly shocked as the page doesn't even warn that it holds nude pornographic images. At the bottom of the page was an 'admin@emailaddress' and I sent a complaint about this user. Who knows? It could be one of those who make money off of the page, but it was something to do.

The e-mail bounced back, of course. This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
Delivery to the following recipients failed.

I then went to Cybertip.ca, most countries have such. I sent the URL to cybertips.ca. But I have little doubt that it is an adult porn site. I have given presentations on Internet Safety to parents and students. It is well worth it to monitor your children on the computer. Especially, if they have hotmail accounts. They will be preyed upon by Tom, Dick and Hairy. In curiosity, they will visit these sites. And can be sucked into this vortex of porn and power over women and children. Eventually, they can be groomed by those who prey. They don't realize that in incremental steps they are being controlled.

Pedophiles groom their victims by pretending to be on their side, by disclaiming the power parents have over the child, becoming their friend, when the child is actually their prey. Be vigilant. Go to the history browser after your child has been on the computer. Ask to see their friends list. Explain to them that their 'friend' may not be...

    Dear Admin,

I publish a blog for seasonal tourist and fellow Muskoka residents, as well as a large group of of friends who are similarly grandparents.
My 2-year old granddaughter visits my site with her mom to see what "Gamma's doing". Fortunately, I do not let just anyone post, but screen comments.

I had a comment recently, promoting your site and I am truly offended. It was posted to my blog called, "Grandparenting from afar", in which I celebrate this technology for helping grandparents visit virtually with their far away grandkids.

It came from www.XXX.c0m/members/hisname and said...

"Well it turns out my girl friend of 2 years has been cheating on me for weeks. I know she and her friends hang out on this site so thought it would be the perfect place to post every last nude photo and video I have of her. Just go to..."

I am very, very upset. This is offensive. You are making women into objects and helping to promote domestic assault and violence against women.

Please tell this person to take off. I am a grandmother.
My site is for fun. This is a disgusting abuse of women, pornography, and promotes sexual abuse, pornography,  rather than the beauty of love between partners.

    'Net savvy users

Muskoka's FYCSM provides much help to young people in our region. One place where they can get into trouble is on-line.

I agree with all Jayne has written here:  At what cost? But I think that vulnerable kids are going to get into trouble no matter where there are: on the streets or on-line.

This past week OPP have issued an important alert: The OPP Crime Prevention Section has a number of tip sheets for both parents and children relating to safe Internet use at opp.ca
What parents can do to protect their children:
    • Be involved and know your child's online activity
    • Keep the computer in an open area of the home
    • Remind children to protect their passwords; encourage them not to share passwords with friends
    • Use caution with web cams, unplug web cams when they're not in use and;
    • Be sure of who they're talking to before allowing them to turn on a web cam
    • Make sure children are cautious with what they post online
    • Know their online friends the same way they know friends in real life
My kids are pretty 'net savvy, and have managed to maintain their values in the on-line presence. I am proud that whatever they tackle, they bring these values to what they do. As a teacher, I tried to instill these values in students. I did a lot of work on Internet Safety with them. Their parents didn't 'get it', and I talked to them about what could happen and how to be careful.

As a member of society, I have often privately e-mailed young people asking is they mean to reveal whatever sensitive things they have written to potential bosses, or their grandmothers. It makes them think!

I have confidence that the kids who understand these values, are not swayed by the trash on MySpace. I, too, have a Facebook page, but like all fads, I find that my 25,27 and 30-yr. old 'children', are not using it much anymore as their real lives take precedence. I do keep in contact with my 2-yr. granddaughter on Skype. She thinks my 1st name is 'kype!

"Gamma 'kype?" she'll ask my daughter, wanting to 'talk' to Gramma!

Violence Against Women- 20th anniversary of a massacre

On this day, the 20th anniversary of the 14 women murdered in École Polytechnique massacre in Quebec. The December 6th story is a sad one.

Hatred of feminists was a new issue 20 years ago. - Women's Rights - not so.  Women have fought so hard for equality and the right to attend university, to vote (1920 in the US; 1927 in Canada), to be declared 'persons' .

In 1989, a male anti-feminist murdered 14 female engineering students. Targeting women, it was the first time that such violence was directed at women. He entered a classroom and told the men to leave. His rant, obviously a seriously disturbed man, who blamed women for his issues. This man was rejected by the army for irrational behaviour. He screamed out at the victims that he hated feminists, they "ruined his life", he wrote in his suicide letter. Nathalie Provost survived, and graduated engineering. She speaks out.

    YET THE VIOLENCE CONTINUES.
Christina Long, May 21, 2002, pictured above, right, was murdered by a man she met on the Internet. The Natalia Novak murder, is another recent story, or the beloved Toronto real estate agent, Susan Ryan, murdered by her former Toronto police officer husband. They need to have their stories told. Most are murdered by men whom they know, not strangers, although not all.  You can read my Internet Safety PPT for teachers and parents. Protect your children.

In 2008, writes the Globe & Mail,

    • 41 % of female victims were murdered by rifles and shotguns
    • 5.8% were murdered with handguns.
There is much coverage accorded our precious soldiers who have died in battle. Little about these abused women, and often their children, who die at the hands of their former partners, all angry men. Restraining orders are not widely upheld.

Fleeing abuse is a difficult prospect. See my previous posts: Muskoka Housing Statistics and The myths of Muskoka Housing.

    • Adequate, affordable and accessible housing is a safety issue… it is part of protecting women from the cycle of violence. (YWCA 2009)
    • In the 12 months between April 1, 2007 and March 31, 2008 – 101, 000 women and children – entered shelters in Canada – 75% were fleeing abuse.
Brian Vallée writes in War On Women, of domestic assaults and inappropriate convictions, with woman who were seldom believed, or changed from victims to those being interrogated by defense attornies.

The statistics often are not reflected in media coverage. The Highway of Heroes is well-lauded. Canadians publicly mourn 133 soldiers dying in Afghanistan, yet...
    Between 2000 and 2006
    • The US lost 8000 women to domestic violence.
    • Canada lost 101 soldiers, and 500 women to domestic violence.
    • More than half of Canadian women have been victims of at least one act of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16 (Status of Women -Canada)
    • Every year, about 25 women are killed by their intimate partners in Ontario.
    • Almost 40% of women assaulted by spouses said their children witnessed the event, which can lead to PTSD.
    • In sexual assault cases 80% know their abusers and 90% of incidents take place at home.
I leave you with hope. Despite such horrific inquests, inadequate restraining orders, and continued stories of abuse, the May/Iles Inquest 1998, was one that laid down the rules for identification of protocol, mandatory charge policies, specialized courses for OPP, and other improvements to this system:

      Protect Our Children Act

I watched a powerful Oprah show today. It was about child pornography and predators. Her call to action revolves around the American Senate Bill #1738 - the Protect Our Children Act. There have been problems passing this act. Sometimes our rights to privacy must be superceded by what is moral. Internet Safety is a topic of concern to me, with a couple of articles to my credit. I have created a PPT to educate parents and teachers. I understand some of the issues.

What I cannot understand is this act. The purpose of the act is to invest millions in setting up law enforcement agencies. Oprah has put a call out to her constituents to pass this law. She cites the need for an infusion of dollars, as well as a tightening of the mandate and money for software to find predators. While her goals are laudable, I think them misplaced. She has the power to sway many people and broadcast important causes, but I wonder if this push for more money is the right one.

They key is empowering parents to prevent such abuses, and teaching those who work with children to be vigilant. The USA's National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is one place to start. Most predation is carried out by people familiar to the children. Also, children who are lured online fall in the small minority. Those who create child porn use their home computers and equipment. That said, there are means by which a parent can determine where a child has been on his or her computer. It is the right of a parent, indeed the obligation to supervise them. Checking the browser history will let you know the sites that are accessed. One must be vigilant.

Regarding this act, I think we must come to the determination that Internet Service Providers must be forced to cooperate with child protection agencies and stop the trading, and marketing of these illegal, immoral and unlawful products. People from around the world must take action. Those who worry about internet censorship and personal and human rights need to wake up. The impact of child pornography on the psyche of the nation is huge. The stress of this problem on the children, their families, law enforcement officers and society is preventable. Something needs to be done. The discussion needs to continue.
