Saturday's Critters

Bug season hasn't let up. The deerflies are horrid. I use these sticky patches on my hats.

Even Fred is annoyed by the deerflies. The durn bugs like the heat, and have terribly painful bites.

We've a young coyote. It visited twice and peed in the same spot. Or two coyotes ran through. hard to say. Booboo bear pooped here. It's a popular travel corridor following the edge of the wetland.

I haven't captured a fisher on the trailcam in a long time.

Yesterday, the latest antics of our two bears. Neither seen near the house, at least in the daytime. They are good bears.  Booboo was back, as well.

Monday dawns

 Monday. Garbage day. Unlike A/C, I had no wish to photograph the sunrise! Typical cool August nights, although the high will be 27C., it began a bit chilly. 

Instead, I put out the garbage. I had a friend, then two. Then three. A buck, a doe in under the sumac trees, and Cinnamon.

Their responses to us, as humans, is very situational. I was down in the forest the other day and he hid behind the trees.

Later, on my walkies, I found lots of red-eyed vireo. Back in the backyard, I heard the cardinal singing, sure enough. I spotted him. The cedar waxwings are still zooming around like an air squadron. 

Down on Oliver's Lot, I found this critter. I would think it is the larvae exoskeleton of a cicada. I've photos of the adults.

There are now 14 frogs in the goldfish pond. I'm going to have to fish them out once the fall brings rain and fill the wetland. Our frog pond is dry.

Two are leopard frogs, the other 12 are green frogs of various sizes. 

The wood frogs jump through the forest. Running to escape me.

I'll end on a fun note. Little Booboo Bear 2 was spotted.

Critters galore!

 The monarch caterpillars continue to hatch on the milkweed. Most of them are tucked under the roof, here. 

You can tell when they are close to their last instar, as the little green poopies are a good size. I could tell this caterpillar was heading downwards, as the poop came out of the top end and bounced off!

Friday, I saw the baby crows in the backyard. This is what I've been hearing since May 30th, they fledged June 30th, but didn't go far. You can see, just like the little birds, these big crows flapping their wings, opening their beaks, and demanding food.

 

We've had some heavy rains. It doesn't phase our lactating doe. Maybe we should name her?She was keen on the clover, so I'm glad I didn't mow it.She was there on and off all day and night. doe in the rain  

   

The coyote is pretty illusive. I had a tough time finding a thumbnail in the video that would show it. The motion is interesting, as it avoids the camera. coyote July 7  

 

They are tough to see in the dark, but it appears Blond Butch is down to 2 kits, if this is her. The third could be nearby. Butch + kits  

  

I put an old pillow down in front of the trailcam. Sometimes the coyotes play. Instead, a bear! Booboo Bear the 2nd. He is a young un', I think. Maybe a year? It's a bit late to see one. Usually, they get kicked out of Momma's territory around May. You can see it is a walking bug magnet.

I fetched the trailcam cards at 10:19, note it was there about an hour before me!  Booboo 2

Booboo Bear: a frequent flyer

He's becoming a regular on the trailcams. We saw him once in the backyard, when we scared him away. I think we have ourselves a bear.

July 25 – Both cats had come onto the deck. Rather unusual. Booboo was in the backyard, he lay down in the shade. When he saw us, he slipped down into the gully.
