Leave it to a retired musician -turned radio host- to complain about the media!

Yes. Leave it to a retired musician -turned radio host- to complain. He who interviews simple-minded actor/musicians like Billie Bob Thornton.

With a devastating typhoon in the Philippines, sectarian violence in Iraq, the uncertain future of the Senate and a huge child pornography bust in Toronto, there's no lack of stories to talk about. In today's opening essay, Jian talks about how we should focus on something other than Rob Ford's trou...
One story is NOT dominating news agenda. (Who else, but media, to blame if that is your opinion.)
We've seen much in reputable newspapers on Obamacare, the tragic events in the Phillipines, and so on. We can read about Toronto, Ottawa, Ontario, Canadian and other subtopics in the news.
This is why newspaper index pages have the following sections:Home

Live coverage of the voting was good
for voters.
It is important that media focus locally, municipally, provincially, and on a national and international basis, on all significant stories.

Intelligent J. Q. Public can focus an many issues. What we want journalists to do is to present issues on a neutral basis, and interview those with the education and intelligence to understand them, and present solutions or interpretations.

We can see who is in Council,
who is absent, and how they voted.

Good politics demands that
voters know who and how they voted.

There is something seriously flawed with a City Act, City of Toronto, that hasn't the ability to remove a Chief Magistrate of the largest city in Canada, who has been caught on Guns & Gangs surveillance doing drugs, and in Toronto Police interviews been seen to be drunk driving.
Municipal politics has the most profound effect on women, children, the most vulnerable in society, in terms of housing, drug abuse, gangs, all the way to water and sewer. This is AS important as national and international news of disasters.

Interesting note:
I wrote a piece of this on FaceBook, after CBC Ottawa flogged Ghomeshi's rant, with a note on its front page, and it was dumped. It simply has disappeared!

We must laugh at the situation, at the same time we can learn from it!

CBO's 'Freaky Fridays' = Jumping the Shark?

It's a shame Ontario Morning is resorting to gimmicks to boost for market share.
Someone's hair-brained idea: to have a guest come in and guest host. It's terribly sad.
As a listener,
since 1981, I find it unsettling during my morning routine, worrying that the 'guest' doesn't screw up. I want the pros to be behind the microphone doing their jobs. I want real news, with actual reporting, journalists who do their jobs, not becoming the story and the entertainment.

I'm not sure why those who have paid good money to attend a concert by a professional would want to listen to a non-singer in a duet.

When did the journalists become the story?

It's no wonder people my age, in rural S.E. Ontario, have turned off CBC in lieu of local radio.

And why the Rip and Read at 5:40 a.m., as well as the rebroadcasts? With a host complaining about getting up early, why doesn't CBO simply start their real broadcasts at 6 a.m.?
They are darn lucky to have a job!

What is happening with CBC Radio and Television?

This isn't news!
It's a cute video, but we cannot see
the point of the video for the large banner!
I began listening to CBC when home with my kids. My youngest turns 28 this week. The eldest 34 this year. I am a long CBC Ottawa radio fan. I should be in their demographic, CBCs target audience, being retired, but I am not. I cannot get an interview regarding my book. I cannot even find local radio hosts who are supportive of my ideas. I now know why.

I read a fabulous editorial. Here is a snippet:

CBC Finances: Robbing radio to pay TV

By CHRIS COBB, Ottawa Citizen March 2, 2013 If you listen carefully, any day of the week you can hear the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. creaking under the weight of its financial burden. A $115-million cut to its $1.1-billion federal subsidy, NHL hockey rights with a $100-million-a-season price tag, two expensive U.S. television game shows and pricey in-house TV drama productions — all of them wrapped in an unexpected recession — have cost the public broadcaster dearly.

This is something that has bothered me endlessly. With the huge US media influence, we have to work hard to find Canadian information. We find CBC covering horrific US news, without discussing the impact on Canadians. And if there is no impact, perhaps we best leave that coverage to CNN. Radio is an important part of my life, and the life of many people I know. We turn it on, listen to entertaining programs, and use it to accompany us on a drive, while we do dishes, write, a great part of the day.
Never mind hockey,
Dorah likes curling!

I first became aware of the change in CBC when they stopped broadcasting only classical music on CBC 2 a few years ago. The uproar in my blog community was loud. They lost 30% of listeners in that mistake, Cobb tells us. Of course, it impacted a goodly segment of my generation and my friends. Classical devotees who didn't want a lot of chatter, free prizes, or discussion of inane topics. Just great music played by Canadian musicians. They are toying with placing ads, asking the CRTC for this option. Really.

CBC 1, too, has been hi-jacked. I loved listening to Anthony Germain on CBO Morning. He was a political animal who pursued good stories, in-depth, with thoughtful, entertaining and educational discourse. As I got ready to go into work, I was challenged to think. He had Fridays off to prepare for the Saturday morning political show, The House. Ottawa was the perfect place for him to be located. We are political animals and enjoyed his shows. They sent him to China to learn the language, this before the 2008 Beijing Olympics. That was a lesson in expensive budgets methinks. The Chinese government wouldn't let him cover many stories! He's back in the Maritimes and Ottawa misses him.

Cheap Talk Radio
Too much US content
Listeners who didn't want the talk radio type of air pollution best left to the AM stations, now have to put up with this as the norm on CBC. Rudeness, toilet humour, and the like. They are begging for higher ratings, and it is dreary. Sure, they are drawing more of the young people, but what about us old farts? We're the ones with disposable incomes, time to listen to the radio, and have embraced the opportunity to carry on with our day with the radio humming along in the background. We Boomers don't seem to be able raise a canon.

CBC management and corporate culture more concerned with Twitter comments than deep conversations. I must admit to being somewhat discouraged with the media these days. The 40-somethings who host run shallow, closed-minded interviews, music snobs who are critical of all but their favourite musicians and genres. They encounter those of us who respectfully disagree, and we are blocked. Shows like Jian Ghomeshis's Q, aimed at target US audiences, interviews far too many American authors and musicians for my taste. I want to hear Canadians on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. I created a chart, most of his guests were Americans. CBC is trying to sell the show in the US. What a mistake.

Chris Cobb interview two former CBC Radio men.
"It’s the slippage in CBC’s journalism that concerns others, including University of Toronto journalism school director Jeffrey Dvorkin, a former managing editor of CBC News, and blogger Bruce Wark, a journalism professor emeritus at King’s College Halifax and former producer of radio news programming."

Those in the know, like Jeffrey Dvorkin, are making my case. Dvorkin blogged about Political Journalists and Entitlements. Another good read!

Have you been hearing this kind of thing? Cobb tells us about three issues.

Rip and Read
Every morning, at 5:30, the host rips and reads the headlines from other broadcast media. If I wanted to hear about what is going on in the UK, I turn to the BBC News. Canadian journalists contribute little of the Canadian perspective, and do not cover the impact on Canadians, for their is little, and I am best to turn the source of the news. Melts are a horrible way to produce news.

Melts
This is when a broadcaster searches various media sources of information and depends upon them for their information. They lack credibility, first-hand information,

If-it-bleeds-it-leads
Blood and guts and 'how do you feel' stories, about people who have lost family or friends. It does put off the listener, so Cobb assures us. We don't want to hear these terrible stories without hearing about what can be done, how to combat particular issues, not just footage of people crying over lost dreams, or lost hopes. We want to know why these things are happening. We want to know what people are doing about it as agencies, or governments. In fact, crime is down, but this isn't news.
Could they not show restraint in the face of grieving parents, for example?
I would be ever so grateful if they would not shove microphones in the faces of those who deal with unbearable grief and ask how they are feeling.

Why the crime rate is irrelevant

Ottawa Citizen - Paul Tuns - 31 Jul 2011
Statistics Canada reported recently that crime is down five per cent, and serious crime is down six per cent. ...

CBC: Twitter, Social media networking isn't news. Just sayin'

What is amazing is that we hear CBC journalists spending so much time on tweets, rather than on reporting news. In the time that they tweet, they could be writing or recording a real story.
Now, I'm gainfully unemployed, but surely employers don't want employees sitting all day on their Crackberries, do they?
Our family had a big discussions about this last weekend!
I wanted to save these tweets, as I find it bizarre how CBC seems to be promoting tweeting, as long as you agree with them. Twitter is a for-profit business, why are they using it willy-nilly?

USA Media influence on Canada

PM Harper's 'soft on crime' stance, largely influenced by the American right to bear arms, Tea Party mavericks, and has resulted in bad crime legislation that negates all the things we Canadians have learned about reparation, restitution and rehabilitation.

There are two areas in which Canada is vastly different from the US: education and healthcare.
With a 25-year career in education, I have seen many US-based initiatives that have crossed over to Canada, despite out system being different, and our educational culture being different.

In my post-career work as a healthcare advocate, I have seen how American pharmaceuticals have influenced healthcare policy in the US. I have witnessed how private health insurance in the US means that the poor suffer, while the rich can pay for insurance plans. How different it is in Canada, where, in theory, universal healthcare is a state-granted right.

I was curious. My impression is that Q, which goes on-air in the morning and is rebroadcast at night, seemed to have a great number of US musicians, authors, researchers and journalists.

I must say it was an impression, as I am keen to hear about what is going on in the world, but I speak to CBC - the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, for upholding Canadian content.

Many Canadians are interested in US personalities, but I am more interested in what is going on in the world, and how Canada is influenced by our near neighbour.
I sat down to put together some real data.
If you tote them up, aside from general discussions, media panels, or Sports Culture panels, the individual guests were from the US (38), some born in Canada (25) with Canadian musicians, other stories from the UK( 7), Japan, China, Paris, Brazil.
Some guests were born in Canada, but work in the US, others were born in the UK, and work in the US. But the predominant number of guests are from the US.

Now, I wouldn't mind listening to these guests, if the show could put a Canadian spin on the whole deal, but Q does not. Q doesn't seem to grasp the root differences between US and Canadian politics, healthcare and education, specifically. It does not examine the parallels between our systems. Researchers, while being interviewed, often throw out the token Canadian spin, "I'm sure it is the same in Canada."

I beg to differ.
An interesting LA Times article on our CBC,

Cultural Exchange: CBC Radio links Canadians from shore to shore

They write in part:
One of the most popular of these shows is "Q," an arts and culture show hosted by Jian Ghomeshi, formerly of the folk-rock group Moxy Früvous. When the show launched in the U.S. last year, there was concern on both sides. Said Ghomeshi, "It's perhaps an extension of our own Canadian inferiority complex that we at times assume that others wouldn't be interested in us and by extension, a misread by their own programmers that Americans wouldn't be interested in what's happening in other countries."

Wish it were so–I think Ghomeshi is being disingenuous. I am more interested in CBC focusing on Canadian issues, musicians, authors, and artists. The big publishers dominate the air waves with book tours and radio spots. It is seldom we hear of the little people, and their truly Canadian stories.
