Monarchs, deer, turkeys

It was a surprise. I thought all our monarchs were gone. We tried putting a sticker on a monarch last week, when the grandkids were here. We couldn't catch one. Tuesday morning, I spotted two newly emerged. The one flew away, the other died in the garden.

A few crepuscular clouds... thanks to them for our recent rains!

Then, there are the trailcams. The same hen with chicks.

Then, a trio of turkeys, 3 toms. They caught the interest of the doe and fawns!

Butch raccoon, and then, since the trailcam light was on, it attracted the bugs, and then the bats! Silly photos, but it is fun seeing them in the night, eating the bugs!

Up the hill they went... turkey, followed by the fawns. This is the 2nd trailcam.

New crosswalks in Perth

Pedestrian Traffic

Small towns can be tricky. We've had 'courtesy crosswalks' for ever. In one of the main intersections in town, there was a small sign that people in town mostly respected (see below). Pedestrians were not very good at it, though. You have to stake a claim, make eye contact with the driver and wait for them to stop. These are screen grabs from June, 2016.

The biggest difference is that there were two crosswalks right beside each other ( as pictured above). Pedestrians were hard to spot, beside illegally parked cars,
They have eliminated one, and I hope people will use just the one crosswalk. Drivers could be stopped on both sides of the intersection. There is another crosswalk a few blocks down. It's scary when a pedestrian pops out into traffic, however. The new, solar-powered signs (2 x $29,000)  I hope will make it easier to grab a driver's attention.

Truck Traffic

There are only two streets that connect highway #7 with parts beyond. There are many trucks that navigate from Ottawa (north east) to Kingston or Toronto (south west). Trucks use Highway #10, and get themselves on Gore St. It's a tough turn. They've talked for years about a ring road between Craig St. and Highway #7, but that's not where the trucks are going. They use Rideau Ferry Rd. to get to highway #15. I remember doing a traffic study in Toronto, when I was in Gr. 11 geography. This would be interesting.

Our old city of Perth (1816), has adapted to cars and trucks. Not well, though.

This is a problem across Ontario, we used to be stops on the way to the city, when traffic consisted of horses and buggies!

Sundance Art Festival

It was a dreary morning, with a dump of rain. It was quite welcome here. Daisy watched it from the back deck. Hooper snuggled in the caterpillar box!

We were happy to get the rain. Checking the weather radar, JB assured me the rain will have passed in Maberly, where the festival takes place. The artisan show, is located west of us, along highway #7. The lightning had moved on, according to the lightning maps, and tally ho.

Off we went through Perth.

Sept 1-3 (Sat, Sun, Mon), Sundance Artisan Show

It was damp, and humid, but the artisans were quite cheery, since the rain had passed. They opened up at 10 a.m., and we were there around 10:30.

I quite liked the dragonfly, in the left of the photo. The artisan brought his forge, too.

The Big Blue Hug
The Big Blue Hug
This artist has an interesting story. He began his art by drawing, and painting, to communicate with his autistic son. His son would draw to communicate with his dad. Dad kept the art, and is now selling it. It is beautiful. He's from Montreal, and quit his day job to sell his new art. His son, Ellis, is now 19-years-old.

I wish we had more wall space, the art is delightful. Our walls are full. Jason Goldsmith sells some amazing night lights, as well. Again, we have 4 going in the basement for when the kidlets visit, so we don't really need another, his are beautiful! You can visit his web page to check them out: The Big Blue Hug. Very Inspiring.

Also, I bought me a new hat! Mad Cap Hats, based in Frontenac County, Ontario.

There is a lower level in the park, a path with more artisans belows. The river is lovely.

It's peculiar. We were parked on the field, across the road. These people parked on the road. The woman could not get out of the car. Her spouse had to back up, allow her to get out on the driveway into our field, and then repark. I don't understand why people park on the road. You have to open your door, with much traffic, and it is risky.

Only 5 mm in the morning, but we had another 14 mm in the afternoon. I ventured out in the rain, in the afternoon. Sadly, hubby's Canadian Airlines umbrella leaks. I was so disappointed. The company existed 1987 - 2001. He moved to Air Canada after that. I loved that umbrella, it has a lovely handle! RIP.

Isn't it lovely!? The rain overflowed the gutters, there was so much falling. A green frog hopped along the sidewalk. They don't like the rain pounding down on them.
