In 2017, the Ontario Provincial Police laid close to 213,000 speeding charges and more than 4,800 street racing charges against Ontario drivers, according to a June 28 media release from the OPP. Street racing is defined as 50 km or more above the posted speed limit.
Death toll from speed-related incidents reach five-year high
During the same year, 75 people were killed from speed-related collisions on OPP-patrolled roads — a five-year high.
Police laid nearly 700 charges against truckers after day-long Ontario safety blitz
June 20 – There have been 3,047 truck-related collisions reported in 2018, including 25 that were fatal.
OPP laid 697 charges against commercial drivers and took 63 transport trucks out of service during Operation Corridor, a 24-hour safety blitz conducted from June 13 to 14.
In partnership with the Ministry of Transportation, police stopped 1,692 trucks.
