LOCAL NEWS

Egan: Waterfront and why you fight

I write from the cottage at Constance Bay, surrounded by water on three sides, a drizzle against the window, the river ready to swallow us whole.

The Weather Network writes about the causes of the floods:

THE PERFECT STORM OF SNOWPACK, APRIL PRECIPITATION AND TEMPERATURES.

Muskoka

Residents in Central Ontario, are doing the blame game in Muskoka. Swift River is being blamed for their flooding. Swift River explains...
The Bala Hydro Project is part of the Muskoka River Watershed. There are 42 dams located within the watershed. Of these, 29 are owned/operated by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), 12 are owned/operated by private companies and 1 by the District Municipality of Muskoka. The Muskoka River Water Management Plan governs the appropriate water levels throughout the spring, summer, fall and winter, and the MNRF directs how dam operators will coordinate to ensure this happens. MNRF currently controls the North and South dams at Bala.

Algonquin Provincial Park still has snow to melt...

Sandbagging areas in Ottawa, Flood Information

A voluntary evacuation has been called for on bayview Dr. in Constance Bay, west of Ottawa. There was a second fire in Constance Bay. About 150 people have had their power cut off, which is bad news for pumps.

We expect snow, rain or ice pellets.

Ottawa April 30th

Nearby Mississippi Lake has settled down. We visited last week (see first post, at the bottom) and took water and muffins. The Red Cross is now in Ottawa flood zones, helping the victims, volunteers and troops. We've 700 troops and 2000 volunteers working to put in sandbags. Firefighters are doing wellness checks by boat to see how people are doing.

The Petawawa Bridge has been shut down. This is Google maps, but you see how high the water is to do that.

We continue to have flooding along the Ottawa River, with peaks from rainfall and snow melt not yet done. One million sandbags have been filled across the city. The Lemieux water plant is at risk, the troops have been sandbagging it.

One evacuated family, in Constance Bay, had a fire in their home. CTV Ottawa has been covering the disaster.

Fire at home in Constance Bay flood zone

Ottawa Fire received a 911 call Monday evening reporting a fire at 795 Bayview Drive.
The stress of citizens is palpable. People stand to lose septic systems and wells, most of those affected by floods are rural villages. Expensive riverside homes, as well as smaller bungalows with septuagenarians. Families are kicking in. Even now, mold is beginning to grow, the water contains gas from generators, fecal matter from flooding septic systems, and flood water.

Disaster tourists... and the bridge closed in Ottawa.

UPDATES: Sun., April 28th

Pretties Island, on Mississippi Lake, is inaccessible. The causeway is several feet underwater. Birch Grove Lane, on Robertson's Shore, is closed, as well as many other roads.
Areas along Mississippi Lake with higher numbers of permanent homes have been particularly impacted. The private road which provides access to several permanent and seasonal homes on Pretties Island is currently under several feet of water and residents have been using boats to access their properties. Emergency services including fire and paramedics are aware of the situation and have the ability respond to any emergencies on the island. No mandatory or voluntary evacuations are in place and residents should call 911 in the event of an emergency.
Blue lines are roads affected in some way.

There are multiple states of emergency. Hydro is out in some spots. In others, for safety, they are going to have to cut power. This won't be good for those using sumps.

Oh, dear. My heart goes out to anyone experiencing a flood -- or any other force of nature.

Instead of that rain, we could desperately use a good couple of weeks of dry weather.
