Sunny day!

That was a day! The power went out, twice. It came back on. Happy dance! I've been watching the CNN coverage of the trial. Such drama! I found out later it was a planned outage to replace hydro poles.

It was a good day for flying!

The two Freds are doing well. Still nest building, and eating!

Lots of weeding, and checking in on the garden. I picked up another tick.

There was lots of sunshine, in between lots of clouds! I took a moment to record this tulip. I just love it. All alone. A bright pop of colour in the garden.

There are some others that are similar, but a little yellow.

Walking down to fetch the mail, I spotted the flicker flying to the tree. I watched it for a moment. The leaves are nearly out. They are nesting in the dead elm nearby, bless their little hearts. I present an archived photo.. It was a lousy photo of him in the tree!

I sent Joseph Brian to the store. He brought home two goldfish. I liked the first photo, with the weird googly eyes, but there are just two.

We were tired by the end of the day. We finished rewatching Unforgotten, Season 4. Hooray for old age. We'd lost the plot! Cinnamon enjoyed it.

Flickers & the kids

Tuesday there is a vote on the proposed new gun range. The Planner has called for another deferral. We are all so angry. We are writing emails to convince them to put us out of our misery.

Anyway, FLICKERS – we've enjoyed the Northern Flickers here. When they fly, you can see the flash of yellow in their tail feathers. They eat bugs in the grass.

One hit the window one year. It was so sad. I always take the opportunity to photograph them, to honour their spirit, and celebrate their beauty.

🐦 I've been hearing our pair of flickers all about the yard.

I was headed down the hill to the trailcams in the forest. The flickers were above my head, chirping away. Then they roared away, around the front yard, and I kept on my way. Down by the frogpond, they landed right above my head, with more chirping. I didn't get THAT video. They were too fast. I did giggle!

At 30 sec.↑ you can watch him establish his territory. It's going on all day, and great to hear.

I have found the nest. They are in the dead elm tree. This was on another trip to the frogpond!

☔ We've rain on the way. It won't impact the flickers. The birds are madly flying around nest building. The songs they sing have changed to territorial ones.

👀 Jesse and the girls phoned from Vancouver on Sunday, asking for a Facetime. We had fun. It was Bryony's 5th birthday on Saturday. (Cluny, Jesse and Stacie have birthdays in May.) It's like Skyping with moving targets, and trickey with the 3-hour time difference. I remember trying it with Jos and Izzy in Ottawa, when we were in Muskoka. It's not ideal, but it is better than the phone.

Yard action

It was time to do some work... I happened to grab myself on my way out to dump a tree branch, as well as putting up my orange colours for fall.

I've gone all out and ordered some straw. When they are past their time, I throw it onto Oliver's Lot, behind the pyramid. The soil is shallow, and it helps the sumac, milkweed and wild aster. I'm short one bale, as it, apparently, fell off on the way here!

We went back, and fetched another. Poor JB had to clean out the back of the car. Sadly, the whole thing fell over in the wind.

I have propped it up. I shall pop a pumpkin or two on it.

JB bought me a scarecrow!

We're nearly at the last of the chrysalids. This is an eastern comma.

Down in the forest... he's back. I haven't seen him since July 10th. April 20th they trapped one and relocated it. This is my sighting page.

I loved this, something scared him, I bet it was the bear!

Saturday Critters abound

What a day it was Thursday. Hubby had eye surgery on his lower eyelid. He's doing well. He looks like I hit him, though, with a good old bruise. It was to remove a lump. He is much better, and the day was a long one.

We left the house at 9:45, for an 11:30 appointment, surgery after 12:30, into the car by 2:00 p.m., and home. I didn't get 'lunch' until 5:00 after taking in his prescription.

Back to my critters.
I was on my way to the pond when I spotted two whitetail deer.

Down at the pond, a song sparrow (you can tell by the black spot), and the wood duck swims to the end of the pond to avoid my camera.

This is silly to show you, but this is how hard it is to take photos of the ducks. This one saw us coming (Daisy and I) and took off. This is why I depend on the Trailcam so much.

Daisy was konked out whilst waiting for Dratted Red Squirrel. She usually awakes quite suddenly, but I managed not to wake her lying in the garden.

Into town for errands, I spotted Annabelle's distant cousin (I presume)! She lives at Canadian Tire, her name is Paulie and she is 7 years there. Paulie is an excellent mouser! Annie, the vet thinks, is about 3 years old.

The highway is a busy with traffic, but the road work: new culverts and eventually new asphalt and a shoulder, will be wonderful. It is necessary, as we have quite a few potholes where the road is worn out with heavy trucks.

Back home, spring flowers and a caterpillar!

This morning, it is zero C. (32 F.) and there was a Northern flicker on the front lawn. Yes, I should wash windows, I know!

NaPoWriMo Day 25 – Anaphora

Prompt
Anaphora is a literary term for the practice of repeating certain words or phrases at the beginning of multiple clauses or, in the case of a poem, multiple lines. The phrase “A time to,” as used in the third Chapter of Ecclesiastes, is a good example of anaphora.

I take a deep breath, beginning anew...
Glorious time of year as garden wakes
I've spent hours using rakes
Creating sanctuary birds return
Twitterpated, I do discern

I take a deep breath, beginning anew...
Chickadees flutter, preen and cajole
Fluttering above the grassy knoll
Surprises daily in my inherited garden
My skills the plants they duly pardon

Painted Lady, flowers
I take a deep breath, beginning anew...
Successes better a list to keep
For past mistakes I've buried deep
Each trial and error and tribulation
Do not require cogitation

I take a deep breath, beginning anew...
As Phoebe begins their ritual yearly
Females taken cavalierly
Daffodils their heads they raise
Springtime's here, we all do praise
