Doe a deer

I love this season, rutting season. A doe will come into heat for 24 hours, once in November, and again in December, if she wasn't impregnated. The male will follow her around, waiting for his chance.

We've Mama and twins hanging about.

Eventually, the twins settled in. Momma nestled down not far away, as well!

Then, Prince William wasn't too far away:

Apparently, Fuzzy fawn missed a spot!

There were deer kisses!

They were playing in the yard, too!

To answer your question, Karen, Nutmeg is a fierce killer, and loves the birds. She stays in after her morning romp in the dark. Cinnamon just goes after voles. I've found 82% of their prey are rodents.

Love the fawns. Apparently mama isn't in season, but likes dear King Charles IV. They are a cute couple, but nothing serious is going on...my guess anyway.

So, in a good year, from their PoV, a buck has two days of good times. I guess from the doe's PoV, she only wants the one day and then pregnancy.

It’s wonderful that to you are able to observe and photograph the essential rhythm of a deer’s life.

I love how you have gotten to know your deer families.

Unfortunately, we do have a problem with feral cats decimating the native Hawaiian bird population. I wish they'd go after the mice and other rodents instead.
