Catalpa tree pruning

The trees sure have grown.

2011

We've two big Catalpas out front. This one is doing well. The leaves are huge. The buds and flowers are wonderful.

The other tree didn't start well or end well that year. My theory is that the sun bouncing off of the house heated the tree and killed off the cambium layer.

Dead branches little the sidewalk.

We managed to trim the second last branch of the catalpa tree during Week 37 of Gramma Camp with my helpers.

Finally, Sept. 24th I managed the last big dead branch. There are new branches growing up from the base of the trunk. We'll see what happens next year.

We have a silk lilac tree out front that is not doing well at all. It will require pruning at some point, but I think it is beyond hope.

Love those big trees. Sorry the little one didn't make it...good to hear some roots are trying to sprout again.

That catalpa is amazing. I've never seen one like that before. Or seen one, period. And that leaf by the pumpkin? WOW!

They are such decorative 'ballerina' trees... I hope the suckers prove to be stronger than the host. YAM xx

Hello Jennifer,
Wonderful pictures of beautiful nature. Great to see the wonderful trees.
All grows up again.
After a hot summer, it's raining hard here now.

Many greetings,
Marco

We had a row of catalpas at our first house. They had to be trimmed every few years or they got out of control.

I do hope that tree comes back after its pruning.

I hope the tree flourishes next year! Cutting back a big tree is a lot of work.

I hope your tree revives.

Jenn - it doesn't quite compare, but I pruned my three golden currants this fall for the first time since they were planted four years ago. One I trimmed quite dramatically, one medium and one mildly. A bit of an experiment to see how they respond in the spring!

We lived in a house once where we kept wondering what it was that was making such a loud noise falling on the roof. Catalpa! We never pruned them, but then we didn't own the house ;) They were fascinating trees.
