Another four soldier are gone. As well as a beautiful, young, promising journalist. One who was to be married in July.
They say this place was one of the 'safest' in and around Kandahar city. I shudder in thinking of the young men and women still serving.
We must honour our dead. As of January, 2010, 138 soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since deployment on this mission beginning in 2002. Our Canadian young men and women who do this job are to be lauded. I still question the mission.
Our Highway of Heroes has honoured the 138 soldiers from those who have died serving others in Afghanistan. On August 24, 2007, the stretch of highway between Toronto (from Highway 404/Don Valley Parkway) and Trenton (from Glen Miller Road) was given the additional name Highway of Heroes, in honour of Canadian Forces personnel killed during the War in Afghanistan.
Since 2002, 138 Canadian soldiers have been killed serving in the Afghanistan mission.
Four Canadian civilians have also been killed, including one diplomat, one journalist and two aid workers. Photo, courtesy Camillia Forsberg, one of those who valiantly stood in the cold and the dark.
To date, more than 300 Canadian soldiers have been wounded in Afghanistan - some in battle, some by accident. Nearly half - 136 - were so badly hurt they needed to be flown back to Canada. Few have returned to work. ..
Between 2000 to 2006, Vallee (War on Women) tells us that 4588 American soldiers were killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Reporter killed in Afghanistan
Calgary Herald reporter Michelle Lang is the first Canadian journalist to die on her first assignment as a war correspondent for the paper. She was two weeks into a 6-week assignment.According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 19 reporters have been killed in Afghanistan since 1992. My heart bleed for her family, her fiance, and her friends and colleagues.
