Slow down, peeps!

What a mess out there. Are people driving faster, and not giving a damn? There is so much passing, and dangerous driving.

I'm thinking about the wonderful First Responders who take care of victims. There was a terrible incident.

Spring unfolds...

Spring continues to unfold as it would. There are those who say we only have three seasons, construction, snow and bugs! It looks like Bell Telephone is doing some heavy work.

We were headed into town to replace our phone. It was quiet, April 12th, in the afternoon!

There was a horrible fire in Perth. Two dozen residents had to be found alternate accommodation. Some are with family members, others have been put up in hotels, with chits from local grocery stores, courtesy of our food bank. There was one man with injuries, and he ended up with burns, and is in hospital. This is low income housing, and you just feel so badly for people.

There is a segment of the population in both the US and Canada, who feel we don't owe anything to our fellow human beings. That those born with a silver spoon in our mouths, should give back. For those to whom much is given, much is required. We donate monthly to our food bank. It is important to give people a hand up.
Before the fire:

Back to our drive... There is still much storm damage about.

An Easter rabbit.

Water is flowing quickly in Port Elmsley.

You can just see the ice on the other side of the Big Rideau.

The Rideau Ferry bridge is being repointed!

The Osprey are back! There are two nests nearby. This one is beside the Rideau Ferry bridge. The reconstruction doesn't seem to bother them!

This nest is in Port Elmsley.

This is all the snow that is left. Back in Muskoka, we used to watch for when the ice went out. Here, it is the snow pile under the deck!

I showed you crocus #1, here are 2, 3 and 4!

I leave you with a giggle. While it is nesting season, the cardinal keeps on fighting with his reflection. The cats get so excited!

Gramma Camp – March Break 2023

Monday morning, graupel. We ended up with a centimetre or two. JB had to wake me up to get the garbage out by 8! Spring forward 🕰!

I put the garbage out and it was raining down on me. Back indoors for my coffee. Hooray.

Isabelle arose by 10. Jos by 11!

Grampa asked Isabelle, "What is the number of the day?" She didn't know.

"The answer is 3.14," he replied. Ah, pie day! Leftover blueberry pie for breakfast. Josephine, growing girl, finished off the pie later.

They packed up. Grampa finished off the tape of his curling final. Gushue won. The girls read.

Sunday the girls did our nails. Grampa was game, but was pondering the colour.

We finished off the Jeopardy recording.

Grampa was thinking green, but I didn't have any. He thought he could do 🇺🇦 flag! All I had was gold. It worked.

We played Crazy 8's for awhile. Lots of fun and laughter. Jos packed up. Isabelle did the same, and deflated their queen-sized blow up bed. She helped me fold the big blankets.

We left about 4:15 for the Hostage Exchange. Momma texted me when she was leaving. I'd heard about a road closure in Perth. It turned out a water main burst, and there is a detour. I had a vague memory of that happening. Sure enough, February, 2011. In about the same spot. I vividly recall driving over that piece of the road, and seeing it bubbling across the highway.

It had changed over to rain. What a dreary day!

UPDATE: The town replied to me on FB, and they finished repairs later yesterday!

We arrived in Franktown, and did the exchange. Here is a happy herd of horses.

The house that had the fire have begun rebuilding. Good to see. No one was hurt. Hooray for our volunteer firefighters! This was from January, 2023, the second photo Mar. 13.
We were home by 5:30, having stopped for salad bowls from the new Mexican place. We put our feet up, patted ourselves on the back for a great visit, and watched another episode of Bäckström.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program! I shall catch up with my blog friends!

I had a trip into town!

I decided, with the troops arriving Monday, I should have a relaxing pedicure. Off I went. It didn't begin well.

Firstly, I was tailed by a Bell van the whole way into town. Then three emergency firefighter vehicles went by. I duly pulled over, which is the law. The Bell truck tried to pass me, since he didn't hear the sirens or see the flashing lights.

The town was crawling with people and vehicles. Into the hotel I went. The parking was atrocious, I snagged the 2nd last spot. I found the last viable spot, methinks. Some people aren't very good at parking between the lines!

This dude didn't seem to care where he parked. Parking was difficult to find. The employees park here, as well as guests.

I had my pedicure, and relaxed. I needed that. It's a lovely setting for a spa and hotel.

Out the window I could see the wedding preparations as Ivy worked on my toes. Women white dresses, and men in tuxes wandering back and forth! It's a popular spot for weddings. They stay in the hotel, have their hair done, and party.

Stewart Park is amazing! The land was donated by Mrs. Stewart in 1947. What an everlasting donation. The gift was given on the condition that no one would be charged admission to visit. That's why the free July music festival is so much fun for all. I was there when there was another wedding: A wedding in Stewart Park in Perth. The photos are so much fun.

I had my deluxe pedicure, which includes a foot and leg massage. I was so relaxed. Heading home, I was tailed by a big, black SUV who thought I should be doing far more than the speed limit. I put on my turn signal, slowed down, and spotted something in the driver's side view mirror. I couldn't believe it. A motorcycle passed the SUV and me. If I hadn't stopped he and I could have been in a terrible way. I was so upset. Why are people in such a hurry?

🚑 The bad news is that our local Perth ER is closing for five days. They are having trouble getting staff. There are a variety of reasons, which our re-elected premier doesn't seem to have a handle on. ("Nothing to see here, folks!") Dr. Drummond says it is due to a nursing shortage exacerbated by a COVID breakout on Thursday. His nursing staff has shrunk from 15 to 5. We'll have to drive 20 km to Smiths Falls, which is easy for us, but not for the most vulnerable.

This morning, on the local news, I found out what the firefighters were headed to Saturday afternoon:

Be safe out there, people. We have people who love and need us.

Where there is smoke...

A week ago, I saw someone trodding up and down the land across the highway. Potential buyers, I thought. A white truck, and two people clearly marching the property lines. It's been for sale, but somewhat overpriced, we thought. It's part swamp. The land owner has been dumping construction debris for years on it: dirt, big rocks, old building materials, asphalt, remnants of stone walls. They use a tractor to bulldoze it all into the wetland.

I went out Wednesday morning to blow the snow. Across the highway, there was a plume of smoke. I'm not sure how anyone thinks burning wet brush makes sense. It releases a lot of hydrocarbons when the fire isn't hot enough. Anyway, there was a small tractor there, and I presumed there was someone in it. They were there a long time. Later, in the afternoon, a truck pulled up. I presumed they would watch it. On into the late afternoon, they were gone.

I was back out Thursday morning, for my morning walk, and no one was there, but the fire was still going. What to do. What to do.

Of course, I went over.

First, I emailed our county. They kindly gave me the name of the fire department administrator.

I called the her, left a message. "What are the bylaws around having a fire?" She didn't get back to me by the afternoon. I checked the bylaws, finally found them:

  • You need a permit.
  • It needs to be done between dawn and dusk.
  • It must be watched.

I called the listing agent for this empty lot. She is no longer listing it.

By then, I walked back out. The rain had stopped, and the smoke was worse. I ended up calling 911. They said they'd send out the fire chief to check it out. It was so comforting!

I donned my coat, again, and as I was working in the yard, I saw him pull up in his truck. He poked at it. He assured me it was more smoke than fire, perhaps even steam. Just as we were talking, he got another call. He said he didn't really want to call his peeps out just for this, but since they had another call, they'd come out and douse it afterwards. SWEET RELIEF!

After I posted this, I found out they are working on the lot. Lots of trucks, backhoe, after a flatbed dropped it off.

Car Repairs

In the meantime, poor JB had taken the care into Crappy Tire for 1 p.m., as the cracked axle had to be repaired. There is something wrong with the brakes, too.

The problem is, the waiting room was packed. He walked around the store. He went for a walk. Ending up in McDonald's, fatigued. The car was down off the elevator, but no one could tell him what was what. Calling me at 3:30, he explained his problem. Finally, at 4:30 he arrived home. He was just wiped. I felt so badly for him.

I made him a nice dinner, and we relaxed. I had a Zoom meeting from 7 - 9 for my volunteer panel, ODPRN, and realised I really ought to have booked a haircut!
