Narrows Lock Birding – Part 1

We needed a change, and to get away from the news. Off we went for a drive to Narrows Locks. It was a sunny day, finally, and it was good to get out. We had our lunch, and took off. Back in the pre-COVID days we'd head out for a trek and have our lunch out. Perhaps, when we can eat outdoors, we'll do that. We still have people in hospital in our health unit with COVID–19.  March doesn't look too good.

The boats still in their coats. The bay at the Rideau Ferry Marina is still quite frozen.

You can see things beginning to thaw, especially where people have dock bubblers and where the sun shines facing south.

There is much meltwater, but the grass is a bit green at Lombardy.

Otter Lake is frozen.

Funny story:

I was down at the end of our driveway last week. I was wearing a bright red hoodie. A car honked as they went by. On the back of the car was a large sign reading FREEDOM! I think they thought I was part of that wacko movement of those who protested in Ottawa last month. It was really strange.

We have our fair share of COVID deniers and protestors. This is an example. I don't think they know that mandates are being lifted.

On the way, there is winter wheat growing, the tender green shoots were obvious.

Corn is gone. I love the straight lines.

Then, on a creek beside highway #15, there were quite a few geese on the open water. I was hopeful that we'd find geese and swans at Narrows Lock.

The roads are pretty bad, with potholes here and there.

I snapped 158 photos on Monday. I shall curate the rest soon, so Joseph Brian can see where we have been! Here is a foreshadowing of what we saw, open water which is a good place to find geese, swans, and mergansers! Here they gather until they fly further north to breed.

...COVID deniers and protestors aren't known to be the smartest folks!

What a nice sunny trek...glad to see the geese, and some ice melt started. Early days of spring are so appreciated.

It’s striking how little snow there is.

Covid came to stay with us, even if it is not welcome -_-

I went to the grocery store this morning and every shopper was wearing a mask but 3 store employees weren't.

It's a lot colder over there than it is here at the moment! Our COVID infections are rising rapidly, but all restrictions are being lifted (except for the mask mandate, which will stay in Scotland but not in England)

Oh, what will they do when the mandates are lifted? I'm sorry this craziness has crossed the border. You're so wise to limit your exposure to news. We know what's going on but we don't have to marinate in it. You're in a beautiful place. Enjoy your wonderful life my friend

A very nice drive -- we're like you guys -- we used to go out to eat lunch or dinner every time we went out, whether it was for shopping, errands, or a sightseeing trip just to get out of the house. We haven't done that for two years now! But we still like to get out for day trips.

Stay well.

It's really good to get out. Having a sunny day makes it much better.

I saw a couple of the flu trucks Klan dimwits in pick up trucks on the weekend, going the wrong way down a one way street. They'll never learn.

It looks like a great ride. The whole truck thing -- it's not going nearly as well here in the US as it did in Canada (for which I am grateful!). One of my fave things was when a cyclist just kept riding the road in front of them and they couldn't pass!

The thing that disturbs me at least here is that it used to be a wonderful thing to display the flag. Now it seems like it has been co-opted for the far right and you don't even like to see it anymore. Makes me sad.

I agree, there are times when it is the right thing to do ...
get out and about and away from the news.

Take care.

All the best Jan
