Froggie Friday

There is so much fun to be had outdoors! It is the season. Cinnamon, after his encounter with whatever he met outside (Oct. 6th), has been venturing outside carefully. He's been walking with JB to the shed. That is great. Finally he was comfortable enough to help me in the garden.

🐸 It was time to ferry frogs down to the frogpond in the forest. I don't know if I need to explain it again, but the goldfish pond freezes and thaws and refreezes during our weird Climate Change winters. It is disgusting having to pluck the carcasses out of the goldfish pond in the spring thaw. This plan is intense, to move them to the frogpond, and good exercise.

The froggies are nestled amongst the water lily leaves, still. It was a chilly day, but I persevered.

Cinnamon came over to help supervise!

I managed to lift 27 frogs , in two 4 lots.

Oct. 11  a.m. –  7 frogs moved
Oct. 11 p.m.  –  7 frogs
Oct. 12 p.m.  – 13 frogs
Oct. 13 p.m. –    5     =   32

Thing is, they all head for the hills dive deep, and disappear once I get going. I keep telling them it is for their own good!

I took the first lot of 7 down to the pond. Cinnamon wanted 'walkies' with me, but stuck pretty close.

There isn't a lot of water left in the pond, but there is muck. The pond drains into the wetland, and I am sure they will find winter sanctuary. We headed back up to the house.

🧰 While I waited for frogs to reappear, I figured I ought to redo the drain pipe. The eaves drains into the water barrel, and I had to drain it for winter. I rejigged the green flexible pipe, but it broke. Happily, I bought a package of 3 or 4 at the time. Sadly, the pipe came out at the top.  By the time I fiddled with it, and reattached it, the sun was out, and I captured 7 more frogs sunning themselves.

Back down we went on Thursday, and released the next group of frogs. I wished them a good sleep! I hope they can nestle in the grasses. My feline supervisor was keen, and quite concerned that the frogs were OK after all our work. I think I have about 5 more frogs to catch, but they are really quick to dive now.

🚑 There is much response online for the young man who died last weekend. According to obituary comments, he was a fine, hardworking young man and will be missed. It is the second fatality near here (another km away), where he died tragically. His funeral is tomorrow.

We've lots of collisions, sometimes I need to process it. The first night we slept here (Sept. 15, 2010) after moving into the house, a guy flipped his car at 7:30 a.m. Another time, a car hit a deer, the car flipped, and a young man (passenger) was seriously hurt. (Sept. 19, 2020 – Car incident near Perth). I asked, but after being in serious condition and going to the hospital, we never heard.

📺 This is for JB. I was watching news and saw an interview with this man. I noticed a photo in the top left corner. JB and I picked up this photo in San Francisco back in 2000 or so!

We took a drive: frog hunting!

I have signed up for a Western chorus frog survey. I've spotted them, well heard them, in two locations. Here in our frog pond, and on Code Road.

You'd know them if you heard them, you can hear it on my video. They are unique. They sound like someone playing with a comb.

Chorus frog on Code Road

My plan is to take the girls out to listen for them next week. We'll see how that works out. There are those dissing others for driving about. I'm not sure why. You're enclosed in a car! One dude out east in Newfoundland [@stan_sdcollins] takes amazing photos and has vowed to stop doing that due to complaints by trolls.

The researchers looked at my area, and determined from satellite images where I'm to look. (What could go wrong?!) I told them two spots I know of, our frog pond and Code Rd., but there you go.

JB and I took a drive to visit the two areas where I'm to look, um, listen. There were several people out walking. It's too cold, right now. It needs to be above 10˚ C. for me to hear them. It was sunny, and 8˚  or 9˚  C. where I was looking. I've now got an idea of my two assigned locations. Site 300 and site 301, they are named.

The horses were a bonus!

There is still ice on the lake, but it'll go soon.

Our colds are better, which is a relief. It is pouring rain today. Yuck. SPlatty cold rain.

I hope you all are safe and sound. I keep seeing surprises on my trailcam!
