The Lymantria dispar dispar (LDD) moth caterpillars, continue to grow. They are at 19 mm. They are all over the maple tree out front. This is from May 30th. ('Gypsy' is a pejorative term.)
The maple tree, below left, is covered. I scraped eggs off of it last fall, but I missed some. What is humorous, is the the nearly dead catalpa tree (right beside it) ended up having caterpillars on it, but it doesn't have any leaves! You can see them blowing in the wind, hanging by a thread, swinging over to a nearly dead tree.
You'll like these, A/C, my accidental monochrome. I still don't know how I set it that way. I couldn't figure out how to unset it, either. I turned the camera off and on. That worked.

We have just a few of those caterpillars in the garden this year. (at least, I think they are the same) Some years are worse than others. My neighbour doesn't care for her trees and the caterpillars congregate there mostly. How fun to have a deer family in your neighbourhood.
Saw a buck in my wild area a couple of days ago. His velvet covered antlers were much bigger so I guess he must be older than yours.

The trees are going to suffer greatly.
Your young one seems quite tame? Love the green leaves, suddenly they emerge, nature always amazes me, but then I wonder why? That is the way the seasons change every year. Down here, rain has eased, roads need to be repaired, farms cleaned up, fences redone, the farmers face a huge struggle ahead, this is the time the Government needs to come to the party and help in a HUGE way. we in the North Island are safe and dry. XXX

They are curious about the camera.
I've been checking for caterpillars here but have seen just a few.
Everything growing well now and very green which is so beautiful about Ontario summers. I would be afraid to tell you how many times I've had to turn things off and on to get them to work. With digital things it seems to work thankfully.
I see they have completely stripped the cherry trees along the road.
We have a wee Butch come visiting. Last night he/she dug the bean seeds up, emptied the hummingbird feeder and ate the orange halves we put out for the orioles. It will be slim pickins' tonight.
I saw a whole bunch of caterpillars dangling from a tree at the beach a couple weeks ago. I wonder why they choose to dangle that way.
