Recycling: Yellow boxes

Well, big changes to our wee county. We just had a municipal election, and the incumbents were re-elected. In the meantime, staff just keeps on keeping on!

I don't think taxpayers in big cities understand life in rural Ontario. We're on well water, we don't have sidewalks, and our recycling isn't as robust as bigger towns and cities. We cannot compost, either, not with Junior Bear. JB washes all of our recycling, and only puts it out on the morning of pick-up. The bears, ravens, and coyotes are prone to getting into garbage. Tourists dump their garbage at the side of the road days before pick-up.

The county is responsible for the roads. JB spotted some garbage at the Park 'N Ride, too much for him, with arthritis in his back, to pick up. The municipality told the county, and they picked up some of it.

Hubby went to the municipal offices, and picked up some free bags. We are only permitted to put out two bags for free. Otherwise, we have to put a sticker on it. Ironically, Tim Hortons donates bags for this purpose. They love him at the office, he walks regularly, and gets so upset with the garbage, he'll go out and pick it up. These yellow bags allow us to put it out for free. We are helping the township and the county.

In the meantime, this is a big change for us. Our tax dollars at work!

3900 YELLOW BOXES arrived this morning. We'll deliver one to every household in DNE next week: Oct 29 - Nov 2. Watch for your personal delivery.
This is like the good, old days, when we lived in Ottawa. Our neighbour used to set the tone for garbage pickup and snow clearing. Mary and her hubby were on top of it all the time. She knew if it was blue or black boxes, and we'd peek out the front door to see what she put on her driveway. Now, JB is the one who reads the flyers and knows when what is being picked up!

Fortunately, we have a pretty new council with enough honourable incumbents to help guide the ship. I hope.

More urban folk are surprised that we don't have a composting option. Perhaps on the next contract renewal.

Separating by box colour seems like a good idea if people will actually follow through.

I live in Renfrew County. Our area has been very progressive with recycling for many years. Once the county took over garbage and recycling, we didn't have to pay a private person to pick up. We paid far more for that service. I don't like that we can only put garbage out every two weeks in summer though. :(

Here in our small town, there was a recent survey on rubbish collection. They proposed a different system, that would cost a huge amount, and as there wasn't enough division between the options, now have residents answering the same questions again. Weekly, as it is, weekly, with a bin instead of bags, fortnightly, with glass and paper separate. I am sure it will cost more. Those boxes are a great way to go, as long as you can manage to carry them.

I said to dad not long ago that the 'keep Britain tidy' campaign of 40 years back needs to be reinvented, because I cannot believe how bad littering has become. Some of it may be the result of fewer bins being available in public spaces - partly for 'safety' reasons but also because it costs councils to maintain them... sigh... soapbox item for me too!!! I recently found out about these people which is a community-driven initiative for all those wrappers that are not included in council collections; biscuit wrappers and the plastic inners of cereal boxes for example. Wonder if there is a collection point near you? I just hate that there is still so much hitting landfill - or worse... YAM xx

I used to take my trash, recycle and compost to a collection center. Where I live now the condo association picks up trash and recycling but I still have to cart compostables to the collection center (which is not so far away at least). I keep it in a five gallon pail with a cover in the garage and take it away every week. Supposedly compost pick up will be mandatory within a year. We'll see.

Waste management has become huge and complicated.

Reading about the problems connected with rubbish, bears and other critters makes me grateful we only have the stray dog to worry about Jenn!

Nice to get a free bag or two. We always grumble about the neighbours who put their garbage/recycling out early and don’t pick up the containers till a day later. Windy days are awful. Yellow boxes are a new one to me, what are they for
