I usually turn off the fountain while I feed them. |
We lost quite a few goldfish in the winter. I've deepened the pond and I hope that will help. We had 2 dozen overwinter the previous year. We had about a dozen to add from the indoor winter tank. I had feline helpers putting the new fish into the pond.
There are many species of goldfish. Shirley I, the first, was supposedly a Shubunkin. I'm not convinced! She has bred well with the others. We were given 5 goldfish rescued from a ditch. Truly amazing, since they eat their eggs! It's hard to determine species. You can buy the cheap 'feeder goldfish', but I wanted to add some good genes into the pool. Our new three are large Sarasa Comet, from China. They grow to the size of their containers.
Refurbished goldfish pond! |
Here is Shirley IV and a buddy inside in the winter fish tank. They are terribly difficult to photograph outdoors. They are very happy swimming along like little sharks, their fins up out of the water!
After the deed was done we feed them.

Buster is working the master plan...drink it dry then walk to the goodies!!! Hehehehe, good work though; it's looking pretty and the fish doing zoomies suggests they are well pleased &*> YAM xx
Lovely pond and goldfish, Jennifer. I would also add a handful of duck weed from a local stream to float on the surface and add a bit of interest, nibbles and shade for the fish. Good job!
I am quite sure without your two "supervisors" this job would never have got done, right!!
I'm amazed that any of your goldfish survive the winter. You must know what you're doing.
Pretty fish, the pond looks great! happy weekend!
Goldfish certainly add colourful interest to a pond. Looks like Buster thinks so too.
They are so beautiful! They eat their eggs? How strange! It sure doesn't prolong their species that way.
Pretty goldfish and I love your helpers!
