Daisy sunbathes |
Our pond is about half thawed. Still no sign of our 3 muskrats, although the bulrushes are beginning to turn green and grow. I set up the Trailcam beside the pond, again–after Bambi's selfie (Muskrat, Hawk, and Deer selfies videos), and I'm not hoping. Daisy and I took a walk down there. The Wood ducks, happily, are sussing out the nesting box. They are hard as heck to photograph!
Our wood duck Daddy last year. The pond has a lot of greening to do... |
The pond is still brown, and very cold. You could hear the ice shattering and dropping into the water. I got all excited and thought it was a Muskrat. Daisy and I sat for awhile to observe. Nada.
I spotted what I think is a Robin nest at the top of a tree, on the hill leading down to the meadow. The meadow is truly a vernal pond right now!
Early this morning, April 13th, about the time cats thought they should be fed, I heard Phoebe gaily singing in the early morning. Another sign. We have two families. One usually nests in the shed, the other down by the pond. I'll keep you posted as I watch for a nest (mid-May 2013)!
Back at the house, Blue jays are happily feeding, while the deer have wandered away for the summer. We only have a few left that hang around. I love that way it pulls up and attacks the peanut with all its might!

Our swallows have been busy checking out the new birdhouses that our friend John built for us. They hide on rainy days, but when the sun come out they're back flying around and scooping up bugs. - Margy
