Good news. Jodi Picoult, about whom I wrote about previously, will have her novel, My Sister's Keeper, released as a movie in June. The novel ends differently than the book, Ms. Picoult warns, but that makes entertainment interesting! Visit her website to see the trailers.Take a peek at the movie trailer »
I cannot help but write about another of hers. I began this blog a week or two ago!
I just finished reading The Tenth Circle, by Jodi Picoult. What a powerful examination of sexual abuse, rape of a teen, teenage parties, and modern teenage behaviour for parents. From what I have been reading in non-fiction, there are many young women who are compromising themselves to keep a boyfriend in the picture.
As always, Ms. Picoult's novel weaves the American court system, legal and medical procedures with a deep knowledge of human, family and social behaviour. She winds us around the plot, with twists and turns that spell reality in which you know that 'happily ever after' is just a myth.
This novel adds some oomph with cartoon drawings by Dustin Weaver. They are spectacular! More of his art can be viewed here.

In the pursuit of this topic, I found many books based in research that support the premise of the book: that good girls can get into trouble and that parents must be vigilant in protecting them not necessarily from themselves but from others. As a mom and grandmother, but especially as someone on the Internet regularly, I must caution parents to monitor their children, especially on the Internet. Jodi Picoult is so talented. And now I'm just so curious about the ending to the movie...
I know, Barrie! Great hook for readers to go see the movie...
Sexual mores have certainly changed since I was a teen. Parents certainly have to be even more vigilant these days. Thank heavens both my daughters are grown!
I'm embarrassed to say I've never read anything by Jodi Picoult, but several of my friends have recommended her highly. I think it's time I check out one of her books!
I agree, Rose. My granddaughter is 18 mos. old. I am grateful that her parents are 'net savy geeks.
You MUST read Ms. Picoult's work! They don't have to be read in order. They are phenomenal.
I just read my first Picoult novel -- and would like to read more of her work. As a mother of a teenage daughter, this sounds ideal.
Would it also be suitable for a teenage girl, do you think?
I would suggest you read it first!
But from what I have heard they all know that this kind of this goes on and it would scare them silly - or sane!
It is graphic, blunt and illustrative. It shows, too, how easy it is for teens to get caught up in being popular- at the expense of your own self-esteem and dignity.
10th Circle was my favorite of Picoult's books. It was fun to see the preview of Sister's Keeper. I think I heard that 10th Circle was being made into a movie too.
I've never read Picoult, but I saw the trailer for My Sister's Keeper and found it intriguing. Maybe I'll try that one first. This new book sounds heavier than I like to read, frankly.
Love Picoult's books. I haven't read THE TENTH CIRCLE yet, but now I'm ready to dive into one of her books again after reading your review. :)
Dive in! For sure... she is a great read.
As a mother of two little girls, I worry constantly . . .
(And as the mother of a child with a chromosomal abnormality, I would absolutely make the same choice the mother in My Sister's Keeper made.)
I've seen this book reviewed on a number of blogs, all positive. I think I'll add it to my reading list. Nice review. If you have time, stop by to read my book review thanks :P
