A good season for reading!

We had 80km winds on Monday. There is lots of loose and drifting snow. I drove into town to pick up a grocery order, and there are garbage cans and recycling bins all over the place. My recycling bin was in the ditch. The garbage can on the road, and rolling. I threw it behind the fence while I carried on into town.

We had snow overnight, on top of the cold winds. I heard Ottawa is a bit of a mess in spots. It is still dark as I write this. I'll have to do the driveway!  After breakfast and coffee!

I found an old video from Muskoka, where we used to live. This is from 14 years ago. Lake Effect Snow!

These are days for reading indoors. I have three library books out. It is time to Take It Back! 😏 (Get it, A/C?!) Two new authors for me. Kia Abdulah is very interesting. A twist on what one expects in both books. It is an excellent introduction to Islamic religion and culture. I've taught many kids from diverse backgrounds. It helps to understand.

🇺🇸 I had a thought. The US president thinks Canada is benefitting from US protection. They think we need to increase our defence budget. Thing is, we don't have many enemies, and if the US didn't provoke so many other nations, we wouldn't need protection! Just sayin'!

Seth Abramson is pointing out the really poor decision-making of the US Administration. Middle class taxpayer money, since oligarch brolicarchs don't pay much in taxes. Nor do they donate to good causes. 

🇨🇦 Same old critters at the feeders. Great excitement, we are having family visit on Family Day weekend! It'll be nice to have someone else to talk, to other than each other and the birds and cats! 

🛷 I did a Wetland walkies with Daisy back in March, 2017. This sled I hauled up to the back yard. It was interesting to research it!

 

I spotted an old archival photo, and that is the sled I found in our backyard wetland.

I hung this Jan. 4th on the guest room door. The plan was to find a local, hand done one, but there aren't many festivals these days. This will do for now. 

Wetland walkies with Daisy

Can you believe it? We were spring-like in February. Now, we're in a deep freeze. Daisy took me on a wetland walk. She loved the ice and kept leading me around and around. The windchill is horrid.

It's warmer down in the wetland, where the trees protect us and the sun shines. There have been other critters there, as she found some good smells!

Out east, Newfoundland had terrible winds.  Hurricane wind speeds, without the hurricane.

Daisy went hither and yon. She almost got me lost, going around in circles, except I could still hear the traffic. She had a blast!

This fallen tree looks to be a good hideout. She was too fast for me to take a photo!


I went back, and the ice is really thick. It was cracking with a loud noise here and there.

I found another old snow machine sled frozen into the ice. The other one I found dates from the 60s, I would estimate this one is the same. It's awful sledding, with hillocks and tussocks.


Then, there are the mouse tunnels, previously under the snow, exposed to the elements.

UPDATE: After some research by myself, I found a Romanian company, Autorol, on Facebook, but it doesn't quite seem to fit. They do have machines and other products.

Bing tells me that Autotrol has been manufacturing machines and motors since 1964! That has an extra T, though!
There is a #AutoRol, but that seems to be Japanese, related to a fighting character in Anime!
There is an Indian company that sells Autorol grease!
A Dutch company, Autorol, sells Nike products.
I sent the photos to some historians at the Perth Historical Society, and they did some more research for me.

At first, they suggested:
It looks like a 1960's vintage, and I suspect may have been made to tow behind an early snowmobile. The shield on the front may have been an aftermarket addition.

It's the same logo!

This makes sense to me. I would say that it was being towed behind a snow machine, and the front bar, where it was attached, broke. It was left behind. In those days people didn't think anything of going out alone.

They came up with a bit more research, and found a couple of photos on kijiji that has the same logo from Bear Autorol.

Look at the maximum speed: 60mi/120km per hour

I have no idea how old they are, but I found this sled and circular metal thingie in our wetland.
Daisy and I went of to try and free it from its frozen bed. Both runners are terribly rusted, and have rusted right off of the bottom of the sled. As I worked at it with the hatchet, Daisy did her thing: exploring, climbing the meagre cedar trees, and checking in periodically with me.
It was quite heavy, as there is several inches of organic matter rotting in the bottom. Much moss, and cedar leaves.

The wetland in winter is beautiful and quite walkable, even for someone with a pulled Achille's tendon! Daisy and I walk across it a lot in winter. (We walk around it in summer.) This time we had a mission.
