Crumbly Acres

I am grateful to live on this property. The horse chestnut leaves as the buds unfold are really something.

Outdoors I planted some new plants. Indoors, I built a chicken thigh casserole. Both good for mental health and something to look forward to! We've a big dump of rain, and that will help the gardens.

We're up to two eggs three eggs in the Phoebe nest. They lay one a day, the first was May 3rd, second May 4th. I went out in the pouring rain and saw three on Sunday!

I am quite happy for the winter season. It's a break from bugs and bear and such. Each season has parts to enjoy. The lily bugs are back, however. [Lily bug beetles - they have won!] The plants have been sprayed with Neem Oil, but I must make up a new batch. I'm not sure how effective this one was. I plucked a couple dozen off of the Asiatic lilies. I used to feed them to Percy, but no more.

The bird feeder is down for the winter. I shall miss it and the birds, but they don't need the food. It attracts bears and we don't need them. They belong in the forest! I dumped that last of the seed on the ground and washed out the feeders.
Look what happened! Mama squirrel really got into her meal.

OK, time to go put garbage out. Have a good week, everyone.

Crumbly Acres flora and fauna

We had a storm go through yesterday. Happily it passed by the time the Canada Day stage show and fireworks were ready to go in Ottawa. They had fireworks on the lake a km away – I could hear them. At least we'd had rain.

Front yard
I was out front putting up my red ribbons for Canada Day July 1st, and spotted a Ctenucha Virginica on the coreopsis.

🦌 Across the highway, a pair of deer were watching me hang ribbons.

Back further, were our two bucks who hang out together. The long weekend traffic was awful. The stores were packed, according to JB, parking lots full.

🐦 Can you see them? I could, sort of, against a smoky, cloudy sky. BIRDnet knew what I suspected. Three birds: Gray catbird, cedar waxwing, and brown thrasher. I think the thrasher landed on the hummingbird feeder, but it was quick.

The rose-breasted grosbeak likes the hummingbird feeder, as well. He's more of a frequent flyer!

Front garden
In the front garden, evening primrose:

I have done pretty well plucking lily bugs off of the lilies. Can you see the second one hiding under the leaf? A snail watches.

The deerflies stick to my hat. So do the leaves!  Guinivere is astonished.

Backyard
Moving to the back, the pink Bridlewreath spirea and rose campion.

I knew the House Wrens were about ready to go. You could see them in the port hole!

After this they flew off. They took off into the forest, and have been hanging around the property.

I had to clean out the Bluebird nest box, well- christened by the House Wrens,  and a wee spider. I pulled all the sticks out. After I filled the water fountain, I rinsed it off with the hose as there were bugs and bird poop.

I think three of the four phoebe eggs have hatched.

Look to the skies!

Our trees are cleaned up, more on that another day. Firstly, tennis!

🎾 We were watching tennis in Spain. They have been having models as ball girls wearing little cropped tops and short skirts. There was fooferaw, and they appeared the next day in skorts.

"Was the decorative ball crew not enough objectification?" - Tennis fans scream misogyny at Madrid Open as presence of models as ball girls goes viral

A New York based company, IMG, is now in charge of the ball kids, and they introduced ball models for the high profile men's games, says Eliza Wastcoat is a Tik Toc video. The regular ball kids work the outside games in more modest clothing, while the ball models work in t-shirts and skirts.

River asked, "Why does the deer fence not just stay up all year so you don't have to put it back up each spring?"

Good question! I don't like the look of it in winter. I have been trying to rake and weed the garden before I put up the fence. It's a pain working around it. Also, I need to pluck off the lily bugs. The deer are mostly off in their summer habitats and I haven't seen them.

✈Today, Russia celebrated Victory Day, an annual holiday marking the defeat of the Nazis, amid mounting anxiety following a series of attacks and over a looming Ukrainian counteroffensive. It was a watered down event. They were busy bombing Ukrainian civilians.

🛩 The weekend was busy here with air traffic. It keeps me sharp following it all. It's not that bending and weeding, and throwing cement water fountain pieces around wore me out! It was such a nice weekend, people were out and about.

It was really busy in the skies May 6 and 7th. I had various levels of success! I nearly tripped in the first clip!

🐦I don't know if this is the kestrel that nests not too far away. It is a bird of prey!

I've stopped feeding the ducks, now that things are warmer. They are hanging about. They do fly pasts, as well, heading for the pond. When they have ducklings, they aren't overhead much at all.

Out shopping with anxiety...

That was a beautiful day, Friday.

The Beer Store

I decided it was time to go into town. I summoned the courage to return wine bottles to The Beer Store around noon. On the way, someone had lost his trailer and hay was in the middle of the road. Right here, where there isn't much road. I felt so badly for him. It was cleaned up when I returned.

The Beer Store has a rule about one customer in each for returns and to buy beer. I went in, you cannot see the returns counter from the door. As always they bark at me to go back outside. Sigh. They need a traffic cop. My hands started shaking at that point. I know clerks are having a tough time... but... I made it in and out, my heart beating pretty fast.

Then, a train appeared. Suddenly the traffic was stopped. I just wanted to hustle and get my chores done. You can't get there from here, as the train tracks cut off the north part of town from where I was! There was a long line of cars waiting to proceed. Deep breaths, patience.

Garden Centre

From there, I went to the garden centre. I didn't know what to expect. In previous years, well, COVID–19 last year, they sold out quickly. Cottagers are reportedly coming here, now, with the good weather. I figured, if I didn't go soon, there would be nothing left. The parking lot was quite full. I was worried already. How long would it take? What are the protocols?

They are allowed 16 customers at a time. (25% capacity) This they control by having only 16 carts available. If two people are shopping together, they each need a cart. I didn't know that when I went to line up. I grabbed a cart, and it was the wrong one. It was taken from me. There is another employee fetching the carts from the parking lot. That helped. As I stood in line, I was asked what I was looking for, and she explained the set up, where the petunias were, and then you go through the veggie section lastly. It was good having a road map in my mind. By now my hands were shaking and I could feel my chest tighten.

It's gardening season! (April 30, 2017)

I wanted another hanging basket, figuring that was easier than doing my own this year, but most of them are prepaid, and planned for, so there wasn't a good selection for me. I tried to hurry, as there was a line out the store. We were only allowed one person in an aisle, so it was slow going. I felt rushed, and my hands were still shaking, my breath fast. Someone came up behind me while I was waiting my turn at the cash. It wasn't a good feeling. All the staff were kind and careful. I said I was experiencing some anxiety, and she was very compassionate, talking me down.

It took a half hour, all told, as I wended my way following the arrows. I forgot to ask about cherry tomatoes, but I found one, and in a hanging basket. I was so happy about that. I'll repot it, I think, as it tends to grow. I have to move the bird feeder, as they often mistake the planter for the feeder.

I was so happy to be home! Taking everything out of the car, I rearranged the hanging planters. The cherry tomatoes are in the red hanging basket. The petunias Caitlin gave me are beside the hummingbird feeder.

My mother's day present! I love the polka dots...
It has lots of teeny cherry blossoms! I am so excited about it.

It's lily bug season. I suck them up into my pooter. It works really well. You suck on one end, which has a gauze cover on it, and pull it into the jar through the long end.

The joys of spring: I put out my laundry!

Cinnamon and I went to see the aspen grove. It is leafing out nicely, despite the deer trimming them!

The frogpond was busy. A water snake!

I figured I should look. The wood ducks have hatched and gone. It was a good outcome, 13/15 hatched. Nothing on the camera, of course. They are just too fast.

The phoebe are safely on the nest, while the robin is still making a decision about which beam it will choose! They are around all day. robin May 14

The rituals of spring, the goldfish are out

There are many rituals during spring. This robin is building a nest!

Then there is the stuff inside that has to be put outside. Hooper decided to whip off the lid of the goldfish tank. He wanted to play with the fishies.

It is, of course, Daisy's spot! He looks from below...

Wednesday, May 9th, out they went into the outside pond!
Daisy was sitting above Annabelle. Annie wisely moved away!
Daisy and I went walkies.

Yes, I need to clean the lens.

Twitch grass. Such a pain in the butt. I've been pulling it for days.

The lily bugs are out! I sprayed with Neem Oil.

Yay, Spring!
