A wet month! |
My records from May over five years, in mm:
2017 | 191.7 |
2016 | 20.6 |
2015 | 68 |
2014 | 166 |
2013 | 117 |
May 30 - 31
May 29th – another dump of rain: 19 mm!
May 25th – a storm rolled in: 14.73mm
May 19th – chilly!
May 18 – horrid storms across southern Ontario: 1 mm for us.
May 17th
May 14th – threat of rain, maybe hail. 5.6 mm is all.
May 5th – 38.9 mm
There are warnings everywhere: Toronto, Muskoka, Ottawa, Kingston, Quebec.
Buckle up. Here we go, #Ottawa. Rain will continue tonight until roughly Monday. Did I mention snow is likely Sunday overnight into Monday? pic.twitter.com/alYAMtkcQb— Kyle Smith (@KylesWeather) May 5, 2017
May flooding
It is everywhere: eastern Ontario: Constance Bay, Ottawa; southern Ontario: Belleville, Kingston, Toronto Island; Central Ontario: Muskoka; west Quebec; New Brunswick; southern interior B.C.
Much damage to property is far better than the loss of life. For all the rain, and flooding, it seems like the only human tragedies are two men missing in B.C.: the amazing fire chief, and an older man whose home was washed away. There have been many evacuations from here to there. More photos here.

Thousands of Canadians are spending the weekend in a desperate struggle with rising floodwaters caused by unusually persistent rainfall.

May 4th – another storm, a long one: 18.5 mm the first night
May 2 – more rain: 4.8 mm
May 1 – 58.8 mm all told!
The storms came in, formerly tornadoes in Texas, bringing lots of water. By 7:00 a.m., we had had 25.4 mm, I checked again in the afternoon: another dump of 11 mm, and in the evening, another huge storm.

We have had a wet May too. I sink in my garden in 6 inches of muck. Too much rain.
This rain is getting very tiring isn't it? The mozzies are horrible here. The small ones can get through the screens so we have to keep our windows closed. Sleeping is difficult.
We should have our firewood standing around the back yard drying. It hasn't even been cut yet! The last wet year we had (2008 or 2014, can't be sure), the tractor/skidder ended up sunk in the mud. We don't want a repeat of that mess. Sadly we have to drive through this dip (which we call the hole) to get through the property.
I keep saying we need to win the lottery so we can afford to bring in a highhoe to dig us a lake!
We had 170+ mm on the first of May and it kept coming and coming. Some roads by the bay are still flooded in town, the waterfront trails are closed, if you know Victoria harbour in Belleville, it is now an island, road to it is submerged. It sure was a wet month
Indeed, damaged property can be replaced but not human lives. However, it is sad; life is shor, and people have to waste so much of it on Nature's whims. Maybe if we people behave better to each other, Nature will be kinder to us.
We certainly had a lot of rain this past month!
190 mm is about our yearly total including snow!
A very wet May here as well. Wish Mother Nature would figure out how to make the distribution a bit more equitable.
I did read that we had 3 or 4 days with more rain than the whole month of May last year, and that was before the past few days.
I always find myself wishing that our weather could be dry during the day and just a nice amount of rain at night ... of course it never happens that way!
All the best Jan
