Most cross to find suitable places to lay their eggs. They like to dig a hole and bury the eggs.
There are places where you can come across almost a dozen at on time. It happens in spring.

The
K & P trail (Kingston & Pembroke) is a good one. Here is a photo of the
Old Nipissing Trail. Great places to walk and see Ontario.
Meantime, I was driving east to see if I could snap some photos of
our local heron rookery. A bit far off, but some reasonable shots.
What was I thinking?
My friends warn me: snappers both snap and pee at would-be rescuers.
This little guy, nothing like the BIG one I found in
Long Lake, as big as a coffee table.

How very sad. I'm sure so many are killed by traffic. Lots of unborn snapping turtles, too.

Great post! Oh I feel so sorry for all the ones who get driven over ( I dont know how to write it in english) The turtles are beautiful and so wonderful that you have them in your nature .
Did it escape? Boom & gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
I've heard that snapper are dangerous too, but PEE? Wow! That's the first time I've heard of that one. That's a huge turtle!
So many snappers get crush in the middle of the road if the drivers can't see them. Too bad they walk too slow. ^_^

I am kind of afraid of those snapping turtles esp. if they plan on using me as a toilet - though I would not like to see one hit on a highway. W.C.C.
@Gary, don't know.
Good question.
We got it back to our side of the road and left. Truly, I think it was headed to the opposite side either TO lay eggs, or having laid eggs.
I just couldn't stand in traffic anymore.
It's a dog eat dog world!
